As a Computer Science Intern you will perform duties involving basic principles of computer science and will work as a member of one of Volpe’s organizational teams. You will carry out specific assignments in accordance with defined work procedures outlined by your supervisor. Complexity of duties increases with experience.
Major duties may include:
• Performing computer science assignments related to the planning, design, development and/or enhancement of software for transportation systems, facilities, vehicles or structures.
• Articulating information through methods such as: fact sheets, project reports, design documentation, discussions, meetings, and briefings or presentations to the project team, Volpe Center management, sponsor representatives or representatives of other government agencies/industrial groups.
• Applying established computer science procedures and analysis tools to assist higher-level specialists or project managers with identifying project limits, providing design specifications to complete the work; preparation of preliminary designs; selecting the best solution from several alternatives for performing portions of field work.
• Using a variety of computer programs and tools, for example: PHP, HTML, HTML 5, JavaScript, NodeJS, JQuery, AJAX, AngularJS, Google Maps API, MySQL, IIS, Hadoop, R, Python, ArcGIS, MATLAB, Tableau bug tracking systems (ex. JIRA), configuration management/collaboration tools (ex. GIT and Confluence, Unit and System Integrations, Amazon Web Services, Develop), or API Web services. Those focusing on geospatial analysis may also utilize Microstation, ArcView, ArcInfo, ArcPad, ArcIMS, ERDAS Imagine, or other systems.
• Traveling to field sites for testing or assignments and performing other related duties, as appropriate. Areas of study may involve: safety data analysis, machine learning concepts, mathematical concepts (calculus, statistics, algebra, algorithms), creating web-based add-ons for vessel tracking, cybersecurity, modern software development/customization, web applications, spatial and non-spatial dataset visualization, geo-referenced digital databases, or computer graphic/display systems.

Currently accepted for or working towards a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science from accredited or pre-accredited institutions (at least 15 of 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus).
GS-3: Completion of one academic year post-high school study.
GS-4: Completion of two academic years of post-high school study; OR associate’s degree.
GS-5: Completion of four academic years post-high school study leading to a bachelor’s degree; OR bachelor’s degree.
GS-7: Completion of one academic year of graduate level education; OR bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement as defined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Operating Manual for Qualification Standards; OR five academic years of pre-professional study.
GS-9: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree; or A LL.B. or J.D., if related.
Superior Academic Achievement- In the upper one-third of graduating class; OR a GPA of 3.0 or higher out of 4.0, as recorded on official transcript, or based on courses completed during final 2 years of curriculum; OR a GPA of 3.5 or higher out of 4.0, based on average of required courses completed in major or required courses in major completed during the final 2 years of curriculum.

Additional information
If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement. Interns may work full-time during the summer and a flexible part-time work schedule during the school year (based on agency needs) while continuing their education.
