Summary

This position is in NASA's Pathways Intern Program which provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience.

The NASA Goddard Archives preserves and provides access to historically and culturally significant material relating to the Goddard Space Flight Center including its Earth and Space Science endeavors; its leadership and partnership in the fields of engineering, science, and technology; and its contribution to human knowledge and well-being.

The Archives strives to accomplish this by facilitating collaboration and fostering relationships across the center in order to identify, preserve, and make discoverable material that provides evidence to the history and culture of the Goddard Space Flight Center. We are seeking interns that will be an archivist and archives specialist. These positions are located in the Management Operations Directorate, Information and Logistics Management Division, Knowledge Resources and Library Services Branch (Code 272).

Help

Archivist/Archives Specialist interns:

•Assist with the appraisal of records for historical significance.
•Accession historically significant records and donated materials into the Goddard Archives.
•Arrange and describe archival records from a variety of media types.
•Create electronic finding aids and/or use content management systems, databases, and spreadsheets to capture relevant archival metadata.
•Perform reference duties by assisting researchers and answering reference requests online and in person.
•Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
•Perform outreach and education in the form of presentations, informal gatherings, online and via social media to promote the mission of the Goddard Archives.
•Perform preservation functions including holdings maintenance, fastener removal, etc.
•Digitize records from a variety of media types using scanners, digital capture equipment, and related software

•Use archival processing techniques to arrange and describe historically significant series of records from the Goddard Archives Collections.
•Create electronic finding aids and/or use content management systems, databases, and spreadsheets to capture relevant metadata relating to the Goddard Archives Collections.
•Assist the media librarian with the streaming and processing of the Goddard Colloquia Video Collection.
•Assist the metadata librarian with metadata capture relating to the Goddard Library’s Digital Repository.
•Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
•Perform basic preservation functions including foldering, rehousing, and labeling of records from a variety of media types.
•Assist the archivist with the preservation of archival holdings requiring conservation and preservation services by outside vendors.
•Digitize records from a variety of media types using scanners, digital capture equipment, audiovisual capture equipment, and related/required software.

  • Enrolled/accepted in an accredited educational institution
  • Pursuing a degree
  • Maintain enrollment at least half time as defined by the institution
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.9 on a 4.0 scale

Be available to begin work no earlier than January 22, 2018.

You must have at least 1 year remaining in your studies before completing your degree requirements. The expected completion date you enter in the NASA Supplemental Questionnaire will be used in making this determination, and applicants who indicate a graduation date prior to December 2018 will be found ineligible.

You will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement.

You will be required to undergo a pre-employment background investigation.

Qualifications

Starting GS grade levels are determined by education level:

GS-7: Completion of 4 academic years of study (or all the requirements) for a bachelor's degree and accepted into a master's program. GS-7 starting salary: $21.53 per hour

GS-9: Completion of 1 academic year of master's level education or acceptance into a Doctoral program. GS-9 starting salary: $26.34 per hour

Education

You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an educational institution accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, go to Department of Education.

The following major(s) are preferred:

  • Digital Media
  • Media Preservation
  • Archival Science
  • History
  • Library Science


  • Upon graduation, the Archivist position requires the intern to have a bachelor's degree in archival science OR bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or political science or government, and 12 semesters hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration or government.

Additional information

You will serve a trial period for the duration of the Intern appointment.

Interns may be considered for conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completing degree requirements provided they:

  • Successfully completed an academic course of study with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.9 (on a 4.0 scale);
  • Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience before completing degree requirements;
  • Meet the qualification requirements for the position to which they are converted; and
  • Maintain acceptable performance.


At NASA, term appointments last from one to six years. If an Intern is converted to a term appointment, they may later be converted to a permanent appointment without competing.

Eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that NASA will offer conversion.

The Intern may be converted to an Archivist or Archives Specialist with promotion potential up to the GS-12 level.

You will only be considered for the highest grade for which you qualify.

Interns may be promoted to higher grades based on the amount of education completed, student trainee work experience, and acceptable performance. However, promotions are not guaranteed.

The payment of relocation expenses is not authorized.
