About the Position:
Darnall Medical Library serves Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), Bethesda, MD. WRNMMC is the largest military medical center in the world, providing health care to over 1,000,000 service members and beneficiaries. The medical center has 67 graduate medical education programs with approximately 750 trainees. As the clinical librarian you will support graduate medical education programs at the point of care. The librarian will develop education programs to support evidence-based practice. He or she will apply expert skill in using Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and other relevant clinical information sources to conduct literature searches for patient-specific care and clinical research hospital wide.

Help

As one of two clinical librarians,you will the serve as the liaison to the Internal Medicine graduate medical education programs and to the Medical Intensive Care Unit. You will attend inpatient teaching rounds 3-4 times a week, conducting real-time searches of the evidence for clinicians and trainees. Serve as expert searcher of a variety of clinical information tools to retrieve published and grey literature to resolve questions on diagnosis, management, and prognosis of conditions and to support clinical research projects. You will actively participates in clinically relevant forums such as morning report, clinical didactics, and journal club. You will be responsible for developing and teaching classes that support evidence-based practice and for teaching general clinical database searching skills in large and small group settings.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Librarian (Medical):

Degree: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;
OR
A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working as a librarian providing direct or embedded liaison services to an assigned medical or nursing department or school (e.g. School of Medicine) at a teaching hospital, university hospital, or academic health sciences institution; developing educational programs that support the practice of evidence-based medicine (EBM) or evidence-based practice (EMP), including teaching classes and giving orientations in a variety of settings and utilizing a variety of teaching strategies; applying Evidence-based medicine (EBM)/Evidence-based practice (EBP) to critically appraise biomedical literature; performing clinical searches for direct patient care queries through PubMed and Ovid Medline; performing and managing searches for research projects, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses; and teaching EndNote citation management tool. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

For Librarian (Medical): Applicants must also possess specialized knowledge of a subject-matter field and/or proficiency directly related to the position being filled. Such knowledge is required for the position, an applicant's education or experience must have included or been supplemented by the requirements specified in the paragraphs below:
A full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university that meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in the specialized field for which the applicant is being considered, e.g., physical science, biological science, social science; or that included any combination of subjects with at least 15 semester hours in a major subject (such as physics or chemistry) that is especially applicable to the position for which the applicant is being considered.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
