Summary

This position is located in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the largest national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture. Its primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States related to the African American experience; to conduct scholarly research designed to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of African American history, to publish findings for both scholarly and general audiences; and to interpret historical developments through public exhibits and programs as well as digital content.

Help

This position is located in the Office of Public Affairs, Communications and Marketing at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Duties include:

  • securing local, national and international media coverage of special events, exhibitions, educational programs, corporate sponsorship, gifts to the Museum, major accessions and other newsworthy events;
  • responding to media inquiries and arranging interviews between media representatives and Museum curators, administrators and staff;
  • managing logistics for news conferences and press events;
  • preparing media briefing packages;
  • negotiating, preparing and managing service agreements with external vendors and consultants; and
  • directing the intern program for the Office of Public Affairs, Communications and Marketing.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as: working in a museum, cultural, or historical institution or in an organization, legislative office or company performing Public Affairs duties including the following: developing, implementing and evaluating communications campaigns and media plans; maintaining relationships with media organizations to generate media coverage; writing and editing materials for media distribution; producing and managing press conferences and media briefings; preparing and managing service agreements with external contractors; and providing technical supervision to junior staff, interns or volunteers. This experience must have been performed for and about African American audiences, constituencies or communities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Or Education: Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to this
position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online questions for the job related competencies below:

  1. Ability to develop, implement, monitor and report on strategic communications and visibility plans, in an organization, museum, historical or cultural institution, focused on African American audiences, history, culture, and communities.
  2. Skill in identifying and capturing the attention of strategically selected media organizations to raise the visibility of the museum, historical or cultural institution, and its programs--or to raise the visibility of a public policy initiative focused on issues impacting African American audiences and communities.
  3. Skill in writing and editing press releases, talking points, fact sheets, backgrounders, copy for web platforms and briefing packages for media interviews and speaking engagements.
  4. Skill in planning, managing and coordinating media tours, press conferences and media coverage of events focusing on issues for and about African American audiences and communities.
  5. Skill in negotiating, preparing and managing service agreements with contractors.
