The position's primary duties will be to triage and take action as appropriate on telephone requests from all pharmacy customers including Veterans, caregivers, nurses, providers, and external customers such as nursing homes. They must process patient's requests appropriately, applying knowledge of pharmacy practice, VA regulations, and hospital procedure, seeking assistance from clinical staff for urgent concerns. To assure that patients receive quality care in a timely fashion, the pharmacy technician must maintain a working knowledge of all pharmacy systems and processes.
A general description of duties includes the following:
a. Primary responsibility for telephone triage, management of inquiries, and timely response to requests.
b. Processes renewal requests per current policy
c. Answers routine inquiries (via telephone or otherwise) from medical staff or veteran patients on the availability of drugs and dosage forms, or prescription status. Refers appropriately to professional staff those questions having to do with drug reactions, rational therapy, and requests for formulary additions, etc. Must maintain a working knowledge of the facility and clinical programs, including drug formulary issues.
d. Telephone Support Activities
1) Receive and respond to all telephone inquiries from patients/family members regarding any issue related to prescription availability, including but not limited to:
a) Refill and mailed prescription status. Inquiries may include questions concerning requested lost refills, anticipated medication arrival dates, and clarification related to medication refill frequencies, refill compliance, and eligibility.
b) Address, telephone number and allergy information verification.
c) Communication and clarification regarding prescription window and mail processing.
d) Communication regarding the processing of medications originally prescribed at other VA facilities.
e) Advise the patient on problem resolution and screen / triage calls for problems that should be referred to a pharmacist or other clinic health care team member for follow-up.
f) Evaluate patient's refill compliance using VISTA / CPRS and notify appropriate clinical pharmacist with all identified concerns.
g) Must maintain a working knowledge of the facility and clinical programs, including drug formulary issues.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. Physical demands do not exceed those of a typical office setting. There may be some walking, standing, twisting, turning, sitting, pushing, bending, repetitive keyboarding, or carrying of light items. Some positions may require sitting for long periods of time at a computer terminal typing data while talking on a telephone headset.
Basic Requirements:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations:
GS-5
(a) Education or Experience. Successful completion a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the one year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least one year of experience at the net lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.
1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
(c) Assignments. This is the full performance level for pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision.
