This position is located in the Office of Public Works (Department of Maintenance and Repair), at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. Midshipmen in residence at the Academy number approximately 1000. The physical plant of the Academy consists of 82 acres of grounds, 42 buildings (over 900,000 square feet floor space) consisting of Administration Buildings, Officers residence, a Library, Classrooms, a Chapel, Midshipmen residence buildings, Athletic Fields and Grandstand, parking areas, piers, floats, and gangways, a garage with 30 motor vehicles of all types, three (3) steam generating plants, various shops used for maintenance, repair and fabrication of parts and units, a greenhouse and swimming pools. In addition the Academy provides administrative space for numerous tenant operations from other Government agencies.
You will be engaged in electrical installation, repair, renovation, design and maintenance of buildings and equipment, and direct and work with (3) three electricians. Give general instructions to the subordinates and contractors as to the work to be accomplished and completion of assignments as received from the Head, Dept of Maintenance and Repair. Supervise through setting pace and demonstrating work methods appropriate for task and assure all required equipment and tools are appropriate for required task. You will also be responsible for the continuing production of the subordinates and contractors assigned for the quality of performance.
This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced Electrician supervisor who has experience performing supervisory work along with electrical work which involves electrical installation, repair, renovation, design and maintenance of buildings and equipment, and directs and works with electricians.

Plans and supervises the maintenance, renovation, installation and repair of 13,200 high and low voltage transmission line transformers and distribution switch gear.
Supervises through setting pace and demonstrating work methods appropriate for the task and assures all required equipment and tools are appropriate for task.
Installs and operates a variety of electrical systems, circuits, controls and equipment.
Possess skill in the planning, layout, and complete installation, modification and repair of various systems, circuits, equipment and controls.
Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineer drawings, and the use of formulas basic to the trade to calculate common properties, e.g. voltage, voltage drop and current capability.
Use hand tools and a variety of test equipment such as wire cutters and trippers, drills, soldering irons, screwdrivers, test meters, test lamps, voltmeters, amp-meters, watt-meters and ohmmeters.
Is responsible for installing, modifying, repairing, tracing and locating defects, loading and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

WORK SCHEDULE: This position requires working on various shifts (day and night) including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays as necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be capable of making frequent inspections of the Academy to observe more closely, situations requiring varying solutions. Must have no fear of heights since assignments require climbing up long ladders to inspect roofs, steel framing, Mariner's Chapel steeple, and other high points of Academy structures. Must be able to crawl through and into crawl spaces and tunnels to inspect underground foundations. During low tide, inspects under piers wearing boots and coveralls. During heavy rain or wind stonns, must be able to inspect flooded areas, and damaged utilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS: There is danger of falling from ladders or scaffolds, from tools dropped by subordinates, and possible eye or hand injuries while operating power equipment. May at times be required to be present and assist in various Academy emergencies as snow storms, ice storms, hurricanes or heavy winds where damage has occurred to buildings, piers, utilities and other Academy facilities.
