Summary

This position is located in the Lunder Conservation Center of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery. The Lunder Conservation Center is comprised of five labs and studios where the public can see conservators examining, assessing, and treating fine art frames, works on paper, objects, and paintings from both museums¿ collections. The visitor areas of the Center are open to the public seven days a week during normal museum hours. The incumbent plans and is responsible for coordinating a wide array of educational programs that aim to reach a broad audience, researches public reaction to the Center and its interpretive elements, and develops and oversees the production of interpretive content which clearly details to the general public what fine art conservation entails and how it serves to preserve our national art treasures.

Duties

Help

  1. Researches conservation topics and collaborates to write and edit narrative for didactic displays.
  2. Identifies or develops media assets, such as photography, video or audio clips.
  3. Coordinates, creates and produces multimedia interpretive elements for computer kiosk, web and social media sites, audio tours and LCD screens.
  4. Manages conversion and transfer of data to content management software.
  5. Conceives and proposes public programs such as open house events, clinics, educational symposia, lectures, conferences, demonstrations, workshops, tours, film presentations and family days.
  6. Researches collaborations and develops partnerships.
  7. Implements programs including physical space, staffing, contractors and materials required.
  8. Researches costs, prepares purchasing orders, proposes budget and maintains financial records.

Qualifications

Experience:

You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.

For this position Specialized experience is defined as planning and implementing a variety of public or educational programs and interpretive materials in an art museum or similar cultural setting, the types of programs consist of lectures, symposia, demonstrations, workshops or tours utilizing interpretive materials such as digital images, video or text.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education:

master's or equivalent graduate degree

or

2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

or

LL.B. or J.D., if related

Or a Combination:

Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of fine arts, art history, museum studies or conservation.
  2. Ability to research and develop interpretive materials.
  3. Knowledge of web and interactive computer applications and formats, especially content management and image editing.
  4. Ability to plan, develop and implement public programs.
  5. Knowledge of financial tracking and procurement.
