The scope of these systems engineering activities includes technical leadership for all flight system elements, including end-to-end data flow from the spacecraft/instrument to the end user interface. You will also develop and implement detailed technical risk mitigation strategies based on hands on experience in prior flight system development, and provide directions for the infusion of new technologies into these Exploration and Science efforts, ensuring that technology advancements are successfully transitioned to flight status. You will coordinate the technical activities of senior and other system and subsystem design engineers and interact effectively with the flight project management. The work may include the entire spectrum of space flight systems ranging from flight component and subsystems to entire spacecraft vehicles and systems. Duties also include monitoring contractors engaged in this work.
You will serve as a recognized engineering expert, technical authority, and technical advisor/consultant to agency management, other government agencies, and the aerospace industry on flight systems. You will manage all technical aspects of the project/program. You will also manage multidisciplinary technical teams in the design, development, integration, testing, evaluation, and early operation of flight vehicle and/or payload hardware, software, and associated systems. Serves as a decision-maker on various panels, conferences, working groups, and technical committees. You will oversee and direct the development and design of large, new, and unusually complex aerospace and aeronautical flight technology, equipment, or systems that impact major programs and result in major advancement in the state-of-the-art of broad technologies. You will develop or direct the development of innovative and/or novel concepts, processes, and techniques. You will monitor program, project, or study progress. Evaluate in-house and contractor proposals for flight systems.
You will provide final expert opinion on the design of flight systems projects characterized by constantly, and sometimes greatly, changing physical environment or other similar variables and unknowns affecting planning and design criteria and critical problems with respect to costs and economics. You will resolve unusual demands caused by extraordinary urgency or public interest. Serves as engineering single point of contact for technical planning of test and evaluation processes.
