Summary

The area of consideration for this vacancy announcement is for U.S. Citizens and Non-Citizens within the Local Commuting Area of Fort Drum, NY. This includes the counties of: St. Lawrence, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis. (Military Spouse Preference (MSP) and Involuntarily Separated Military Preference (ISMP) Preference eligible candidates are included in the area of consideration.)

This position is located within Child, Youth, and School Services Division at the Middle School / Teen Center.

Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division (LI), is located in northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering many outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles south of the Canadian border, 85 miles north of Syracuse, and 350 miles north of New York City. It is located with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Help

  • Applies professional knowledge to plan, implement, and supervise a comprehensive program that promotes positive growth and development of
    children and youth.
  • Serves as a member of the Installation Child and Youth Evaluation Team to ensure compliance with health, fire, safety, facility and program
    regulatory requirements and CYS baseline standards.
  • Assists in complying with DA guidance to include CYPPP, fee policies, program registration/enrollment, and baseline standards and benchmarks, and provides input on installation needs and trends to CYS Program Director for inclusion in the CYS Operations Plan.
  • Supervises and evaluates employees based on established performance standards as required.
  • Implements an active program of parental involvement, providing parent education opportunities and encouraging parent observation and participation.

Qualifications

QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS OPTION #1 OR #2:

OPTION #1:

  • Successful completion of an undergraduate Degree that included or was supplemented by major study (at least 24 semester hours) in youth development, youth administration, education, home economics, physical education, elementary education, special education or other fields appropriate to the position to be filled such as related behavioral science. (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE UPLOADED AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • IN ADDITION TO THE EDUCATION, THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET:
    • Work experience teaching children or other work that demonstrated the ability to perform the duties of the position, AND
    • Ability to select, train, and supervise childcare and preschool employees, family childcare providers, or other care-giving adults, AND
    • Ability to develop and implement child development programs, including family day care programs, part-day preschool programs, and before and after school programs, AND
    • Ability to plan and organize work, analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data and recognize solutions, AND
    • Possess ample oral and communications skills and analytical writing skills, AND
    • Ability to present ideas and proposals to a variety of audiences.
OR

OPTION #2:
  • Possess a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in a subject matter field (24 semester hours) appropriate to the position (see above), plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four-year course of study described above. (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE UPLOADED AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • IN ADDITION TO THE EDUCATION, THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET:
    • Possess three (3) months of directly related work experience teaching children or similar work requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position to be filled, AND
    • Ability to develop and implement child development programs, including family day care programs, part-day preschool programs, and before and after school programs, AND
    • Ability to plan and organize work, analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data and recognize solutions, AND
    • Possess ample oral and communications skills and analytical writing skills, AND
    • Ability to present ideas and proposals to a variety of audiences.
EXAMPLES for Combination of Experience & Education:
* 1 year work experience with children & youth PLUS 3 years of education (90 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above, OR
* 2 years work experience with children & youth PLUS 2 years of education (60 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above, OR
* 3 years work experience with children & youth PLUS 1 year of education (30 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above.

HIGHLY PREFERRED are those candidates that possess both the minimum qualifications above and:
  • One (1) year of experience working with teens ages 13-18, AND/OR
  • One (1) year of experience working with the Boys and Girls Club of America or 4-H Program.
