Summary

This position is located in the Economic Research Service (ERS), Information Services Division (ISD) in Washington, DC.

ERS conducts broad programs of economic and other social science research and analysis relating to agriculture, food, natural resources and rural America for use by public and private decision makers. ERS' clients are the executive and legislative branches; environmental, consumer and public interest groups, including farm and industry groups; and the general public.

ISD provides technical leadership, guidance, training, coordination, and other assistance in computing, editing, disseminating information, and operations in support of the economic research and analysis mission of ERS.

The purpose of this position is to edit manuscripts, produce tables, charts, and camera copy, and manage the production process for publications.

Duties

Help

MAJOR DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Edit research manuscripts and articles on agricultural economics; rewrites for clarity and accuracy. Proofreads to detect and mark all typographical, spelling, and style errors using standard proofreader marks and the Government Publishing Office (GPO) Style Manual and ERS convention.
  • Edit market analysis reports and special outlooks, as required, ensuring that they comply with policies and procedures and are accurate and concise.

  • Write and edits report summaries, social media content, and other materials as assigned, and obtains necessary clearance of such materials, and coordinates distribution. 
  • Prepare publications for dissemination on the Agency’s website.
  • Prepare camera copy (text, tables, graphics), suitable for printing, using electronic desktop publishing packages. 
  • Advise researchers on matters of editorial style, format, composition of charts and tables, clearance, and distribution in a positive manner.
  • Oversees other aspects of production, including design and printing.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Time in grade restrictions apply for all candidates under merit promotion procedures and must be met by 11:59 pm Eastern time on the closing date of this vacancy announcement.  Applicants must meet one year at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade. (e.g. one year at the GS-11 grade level for consideration for the GS-12 grade level.)

Specialized Experience

GS-09:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which has equipped the candidate with the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes experience assisting with the production process for publications, editing manuscripts, reports and other documents for publication review, using a variety of social media and online publications and websites to publish documents and reach a variety of audiences.  

OR

Education: Successful completion of a Masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D, if related.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.



GS-11:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which has equipped the candidate with the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities to perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience includes experience overseeing the production process and giving affirmative, constructive criticism to designers and authors, handling time-sensitive deadlines; editing a variety of documents related to agricultural, economics, agricultural economics, statistics, or other highly technical publications; providing recommendations on editorial styles; translating complex technical information into simpler, plain language where applicable; using social media, other online formats and content management systems for publication; identifying mistakes in report layout and correcting them.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such degree in a related field of study or LL.M, if related.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above. 


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
