Help

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Work independently and on teams to complete tasks for surveys, the decennial census, population estimates, and/or administrative records.
  • Communicate with supervisor and employees throughout the organization performing work for the assigned programs and projects.
  • Apply statistical theories, techniques, and methods to programs for collecting, processing, or presenting statistical information.
  • Develop and design survey questionnaires for paper and/or automated data collection efforts.
  • Evaluate appropriate methodology and perform data collection, research, and/or dissemination tasks for surveys, decennial census, population estimates, and/or administrative records.

Qualifications

Minimum Education Requirement:

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

NOTE: As indicated in A above credit toward meeting statistical course requirements will be granted for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. Additionally, to receive credit for course work that is not catalogued on the transcript as Statistics or contain 'statistics' in the course title, applicants must attach an official course description for the course that clarifies that the course has statistical content, or written documentation (documentation must be on official school letterhead) from a professor or a school official verifying that the content of a course has either met the 50% statistics course requirements or was a statistical course if the course name in your transcript is not entitled as statistics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

Specialized Experience:

For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes writing clearly and effectively; assisting with preparing and delivering presentations to technical and non-technical audiences; background specializing in Demography, Sociology, Economics, Statistics, or Survey Methodology; assisting with reviewing or analyzing demographic or economic data; using statistical software such as SAS, Stata, SPSS, R or some other statistical software; and experience working in teams and completing projects on time.

OR

Education:
1 year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement.

For the GS-09, you must have one year of specialied experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes writing clearly and effectively; preparing and delivering presentations to technical and non-technical audiences; background specializing in Demography, Sociology, Economics, Statistics, or Survey Methodology; reviewing or analyzing demographic or economic data; using statistical software such as SAS, Stata, SPSS, R or some other statistical software; conducting/participating in a project from start to finish, and experience working in teams and completing projects on time.

OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education.

For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes writing clearly and effectively; preparing and delivering presentations to technical and non-technical audiences; background specializing in Demography, Sociology, Economics, Statistics, or Survey Methodology; reviewing or analyzing demographic or economic data; using statistical software such as SAS, Stata, SPSS, R or some other statistical software; conducting/participating in a project from start to finish, setting priorities, and maintaining schedules; and experience working in teams and completing projects on time.

OR

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree that provided you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work of a survey statistician.

For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes writing clearly and effectively; preparing and delivering presentations to technical and non-technical audiences; reviewing or analyzing demographic or economic data; using statistical software such as SAS, Stata, SPSS, R or some other statistical software; background specializing in Demography, Sociology, Economics, Statistics, or Survey Methodology; oversee a project from start to finish, setting priorities, and maintaining schedules; and experience working in teams and completing projects on time.

Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies,

knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
