This position is located in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) Library and Archives in the Research Services Division, Smithsonian Libraries (SIL), Smithsonian Institution (SI), located in Washington, DC. The employee provides broad range of advanced archival principles, methods of appraisal, arrangement, preservation, and description to accessioned archival collections, retired official records of the museum, as well as the personal professional research files of museum staff.

Duties

Help


  1. Processes new and legacy archival collections, prepares well-written narrative finding aids and folder-level inventories for each collection assigned. Description includes completing and uploading EAD-compliant finding aids that can be linked to Smithsonian collection management databases and systems, and entered in Archivists’ Toolkit in accordance with archival descriptive standards including DACS.
  2. Assists the Archivist in the physical collections management of archival materials applying basic preservation methods that include: removing damaging residue or attachments; rehousing documents in acid free folders and containers; flattening and storage methodology; and assisting in identifying materials that require preservation treatment and/or digitization.
  3. Assists the Archivist in providing research and reference service promptly and effectively to management and staff of the Smithsonian Institution, to research scholars, and to members of the general public, drawing upon a broad knowledge of the NMAAHC archival collections, and topics in the specialization of African American history and culture.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivelent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as performing the following activities: archival arrangement, preservation, and description of manuscript, photo, and mixed-media collections; using archive management systems (Archivists’ Toolkit, Archon, etc.), and providing reference service to archival or library researchers.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements. As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  • Knowledge of advanced archival principles, methods, and techniques, automated information systems, and their applications to routine archival situations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use electronic archival and museum collection information management systems for describing, organizing, and managing archival holdings.
  • Ability in assessing the condition of documents and recommending appropriate housing, storage, handling and digitization.
  • Ability to perform onsite and remote reference service with a wide variety of archival researchers, including museum professionals, scholars, non-traditional researchers, and the general public.
Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
