    Summary

    The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Mexico has approximately 165 employees and contractors. The main office is located in Albuquerque. The branch office in Las Cruces is located approximately 225 miles south of Albuquerque, is 50 miles from the Mexican border, and includes approximately 45 of the district employees and contractors. The District also has an unstaffed office in Santa Fe.

    The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Mexico is charged with the primary responsibility for prosecuting all federal crimes from acts of terrorism, to public corruption, white collar crime, organized crime and gang activities, and many other criminal acts. Through its Civil Division, the Office is charged with defending agencies of the U.S., enforcing regulatory agencies= authority, and recovering funds from violators of U.S. criminal, regulatory and civil laws. The Criminal side of the Office is broken into several divisions and units, including immigration, white collar crime, narcotics, violent crimes, and appeals.

    All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis.

    Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

    Responsibilities

    The attorney selected will be working in the Las Cruces Branch office and will handle prosecutions of a wide variety of federal offenses.

    Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case. Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills as well as strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Applicants must possess excellent communication and courtroom skills and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies. Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer literacy skills to include experience with automated research on the Internet, electronic court filing, and electronic e-mail and word processing systems.

    Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
