About the Position:

Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Help

Major Duties: Serves as the garrison/installation Outreach Program Coordinator responsible for linking a variety of military and civilian support services with those soldiers, DA civilians and family members who have greatest need of and are least likely to seek out and utilize such services. The outreach concept describes a method of service delivery and an approach to community organization designed to foster self-reliance and a sense of belonging. The composition of a given community and priority support service need of the community typically define the character of the Outreach Program.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: being able to brief large groups of people at a time; 2) Effectively market an agency's programs and services; 3) Ability to effectively communicate in writing and; 4) Possess friendly positive customer service skills. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service ( GS-07 ).

In Addition to the specialized experience applicants must meet the Basic Requirement described below:

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  •  Knowledge in Installation Outreach Program
  • Ability to Identify Service Needs and Methods of Delivery
  • Ability to Determine Issues and Resolution
  • Ability to Communicate Orally

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-07 grade (or equivalent).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.  For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:

 

To qualify based on education in lieu of specialized experience, applicants must possess a completed master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the GS-09 grade level, and may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at that grade level. (When crediting education that requires specific course work, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used.)
