About the Position:
Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York's picturesque North country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Help

This position is located in the Materiel Maintenance Division, Logistics Readiness Center (LRC).

The work of the position involves the following:

  • Repairing, overhauling, and rebuilding major assemblies to include engines, transmissions, drive lines, and hydraulic liftings.
  • Tracing and locating defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine extent of required repairs.
  • Diagnosing and repairing failures in electrical systems.
  • Troubleshooting and performing major repairs, overhaul and maintenance of a variety of powered support equipment.
  • Inspecting equipment on receipt, assigning condition codes and determining if economically repairable.
  • Operating a motor vehicle with up to and including 1 ton capacity for transportation to/from worksites.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Experience includes; repairing, overhauling and rebuilding major assemblies, systems, engines, and transmissions; making changes and modifications to parts, pieces and equipment systems; diagnosing and repairing wiring systems - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Trouble shooting
  • Use of Measuring Instruments
  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Stands, walks, bends, works in awkward positions. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing and arm movement. Incumbent sometimes works in cramped areas. Frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds and lifting heavier items using jacks, hoists, etc
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and occasionally outside. Inside, incumbent is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noise. Outside, incumbent may on occasion be required to work in bad weather. Both inside and outside, frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, etc. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, burns, bruises, and electrical shocks. Wears protective clothing and equipment as necessary.
