Duties

Help

  • Serve as a general dentist performing prevention, diagnosis, and treatment and/or referral of patients with disease, injuries, and deformities of the teeth, the jaws, and other structures and tissues associated with the oral cavity and masticatory system
  • Diagnose and treat dental problems using understanding of treatment options and patient behavioral and management techniques
  • Enter workload production data into a workload data reporting system and mentor or train less experienced dentists and ancillaries

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Dentist (General Practice):

Education: Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education & knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school.

Licensure: A current, active, valid, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience: have at least two (2) years of professional dentistry experience and/or training providing all phases of general dental care including skills such as, but not limited to, dental examinations, prophylaxis treatments, and teeth extractions, simple & compound cavities and/or taking mouth impressions for crowns, dentures & bridges. The specialized experience must be in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level requiring application of the knowledge, skills & abilities of the position being filled.

Education: have superior academic ability defined as that demonstrated by an intern, who on the basis of an evaluation of all interns who have completed training in the same hospital or in the same kind of internship program over the past five years, would fall into the upper half of the group.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
