About the Position:

Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation. You can watch them on parade or competing as intercollegiate athletes in a wide range of sports events. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works to maintain the roads, grounds and facilities, two libraries (Academic and Community), a military hospital, fire department, chapels, restaurants. West Point's 3,000 civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center, and to recreational facilities such as an 18-hole Golf Course and Ski Slope.

Duties

Help

You will serve as the Public Affairs Specialist in the Public Affairs Office, West Point, New York.  The primary responsibility of this position is developing, implementing, and managing the United States Military Academy (USMA) Parents Program. Some of the duties required include:

  • Facilitate on-going provision of information to West Point parents, West Point Parent's Clubs, prospective parents and cadets and current cadets.
  • Research, plan, and create briefings, announcements, photographs, video promotions, news and feature articles and social media posts.
  • Provide briefings to large and small groups of parents, cadets, prospective candidates and parents and other target audiences.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise special activities.
  • Coordinate parent access to the installation, applications for access badges, transportation, seating, meals, speakers, parking, handouts, advertising, and notification thru the parent channels.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience Required: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) assisting in organizing promotional programs and events; 2) writing articles for external and internal publications; 3) disseminating information to the target audience using social media platforms; and 4) assisting in providing briefings.  This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of communications principles, methods and techniques.
  • Skill in executing events.
  • Skill in written communication.
  • Ability to communicate orally.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-07 grade (or equivalent).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.  For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:


Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related. This graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. One (1) year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study or if that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one (1) year of full-time study requirement. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. (To qualify based on education, your transcripts are required with your application for verification.)


Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
