About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

This position is located in the Logistics Readiness Center (LRC), Fort Drum, NY

In this position you will:

  • Perform a variety of warehousing duties that include receiving, unloading, and processing incoming shipments by various modes of transportation.
  • Assemble material into subgroups based on property class, condition and type of transaction.
  • Set up proper storage areas for material within the general warehousing plan.
  • Pack items using appropriate techniques, procedures, equipment and materials for shipping.
  • Participate in warehouse inventories.
  • Assist in determining reasons for overages, shortages and misplaced items.
  • Operate trucks to transport freight and/or equipment to various locations to on or off post locations.
  • Operate fork lifts to load/unload and transfer materials from one location to another.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Materials Handler (Motor Vehicle Operator/Fork Lift Operator) without more than normal supervision.
Applicants must meet this screen out element to be considered further. To meet the screen out element applicants should document experience in the following: receiving, unloading and processing incoming shipment from various sources; setting up proper storage areas for material within general warehousing plan; assisting in assembling items for shipping and participating in warehouse inventories. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

Physical Effort: This position requires standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. You may be required to work at a rapid pace for prolonged periods. You will frequently lift and carry material weighing up to 45 pounds unassisted and heavier with assistance of a coworker or lifting device. Moderate physical effort is used in operating fork lift and truck hand and foot controls.

Working Conditions: This position requires working inside and outside and is subject to heat, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted areas. You may work on open docks or storage yards and the work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. You will frequently be exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises; falls from ladders, etc.
