About the Position:

  • This position is with the Deputy Commander for Clinical Services, Behavioral Health Department, Fort Drum, NY.
  • Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, is located in Northern New York's picturesque North County. As one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, the area offers bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities such as hunting, fishing, boating, sailing, scuba diving, white water rafting, and winter sports of all types. Fort Drum borders Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence River, Canada, the Adirondack Mountains, and Vermont.
  • The Department of Behavioral Health consists of four Embedded Behavioral Health Teams, the Child and Family Behavioral Health System, the Family Advocacy Program, the Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Clinic, and the Army Substance Abuse Program. The department has over 120 employees in seven different buildings to provide exceptional behavioral health care to Soldiers and Family members.

Duties

Help

As a Social Worker (Family Advocacy), at Ft. Drum you will:

  • Conduct comprehensive and complex risk assessments, clinical interviews, and psychosocial assessment of children and adults.
  • Make treatment recommendations to the multi-disciplinary Family Advocacy Program Case Review Committee team.
  • Obtain relevant data from legal, investigatory, medical, command, social service agencies, schools, resource programs, etc. to compile information and present for a determination of abuse or neglect to the Family Advocacy Program Case Review Committee.
  • Analyze the information and use professional judgment concerning difficult decisions that may have serious consequences to the child or the family.
  • Provide therapeutic treatment to victims, offenders and family members of those involved in domestic violence or child abuse or neglect.

  • All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA). Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • A Childcare Background Check (CNACI) is required.  This position has a specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require contact with children.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement for Social Worker (Family Advocacy):

Degree:  Master's degree (or higher degree) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.  To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized experience is defined as: assessing incidents of abuse or neglect, providing individual or group counseling to abusers or victims, and developing treatment plans to those involved in abuse or neglect.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. 
Licensure: This position has a licensure requirement. You must provide a copy of your current, active, valid, unrestricted clinical license to practice Social Work independently, offered by a U.S. State, District of Columbia, commonwealth, territory or jurisdiction.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of behavioral health assessment
  • Ability to make independent judgment
  • Ability to develop comprehensive treatment plans
  • Ability to provide technical advice
