The Sciences and Exploration Directorate (SED) is the largest Earth and space science research organization in the world. The incumbent will serve as Director, Heliophysics Science Division, which is responsible for developing and conducting a broad program of research, both experimental and theoretical, in Heliophysics. The incumbent serves as one of four division directors reporting to the Director, Sciences and Exploration Directorate (SED), and with the Directorate, sets the overall scientific priorities of the division, which, in turn define the priorities for deployment of various resources such as labor, facilities, and research and travel funds. The major areas of space science that comprise the Heliophysics Science Division include Solar Physics, Heliospheric Physics, Geospace Physics, and Space Weather. Also included in the Division’s program are important activities in planetary magnetospheres. Under the director and leadership of the incumbent, the Division responds to announcements of Opportunity from NASA Headquarters, are responsible for the construction and delivery of flight hardware to sounding rocket, satellite, and spacecraft projects, and for the analyses of the data from these experiments and the publication of results in the scientific literature.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS
1. Recognized in the international science community for research achievements and publications in Heliophysics, with demonstrated experience and management of space-based Heliophysics investigations. This includes demonstrated knowledge of data analysis activities, science operations, data management, and outreach activities. Demonstrated ability to provide high quality scientific definition and support for new Heliophysics mission concepts, from preparation, submission, through formulation and implementation, and to provide advocacy for successful proposals developed in a team environment. Proven ability to form collaborations and negotiate with partners.
2. Demonstrated ability to prepare and implement annual institutional budgets; implementation of approaches to improve operational efficiency; effective and timely performance; when required revisit and accommodate budget, resources, science program, congressional and other external changes affecting an organization's research programs; maintain the flexibility to ensure successful completion of revised programs.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop a vision for the organization's science objectives and their implementation and to serve as an effective advocate of those objectives by justifying resources required and by effectively developing long-range planning without significant change in allocated resources (e.g., civil service staffing, contractor support) while still supporting a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
