Help

This position is located in the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Drum NY.  As a Maintenance Worker (Motor Vehicle Operator), you will perform a variety of skilled trades and tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, roads, grounds, and related projects for facilities, including fixtures, utilities, and equipment. Install, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of commercial and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning equipment such as refrigerators, deep freezers, fans, air conditioning units, and other equipment of comparable complexity; and a variety of small and domestic heating units and systems including, oil and gas burning plants and units, low pressure hot water and steam boilers, and other equipment with comparable arrangements of heat sources, controls, and circulating methods. Install, diagnose, and repair industrial and domestic appliances (i.e., washers, dryers, etc.), temperature controls, burners, safety valves, compressors, evaporators, fans, solenoid valves, etc. Make electrical repairs by removing, replacing, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures. Monitor and diagnose problems for energy management control systems (EMCS).

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Universal Certification for Proper Refrigerant Practices. (NOTE: You must upload a copy of your Current Certification. Failure to provide a current/active Certification will result in your application being removed from consideration.)

Screen Out Element: Ability to do the work of the position of a Maintenance Worker (MVO), WG-4749-08 as stated in the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

There is not specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below.  Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works from ladders, scaffolds, and on platforms in cramped and hard to reach places. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels and climbs, end works in awkward, tiring and uncomfortable positions. Moderate to heavy physical effort is involved, frequently lifting, moving, and carrying items up to 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo, handling heavy equipment, parts, tools and materials, pushing wheelbarrows and running power mowers. Considerable arm movement in plumbing, carpentry work, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside, exposed to all weather conditions. Exposed to dust, dirt, grease, oils, and noisy conditions. Inside work is usually performed on concrete floors. Area is frequently inadequately heated end cooled. Subject to possible injury from vehicular accidents, loading and unloading cargo, or from hand end power tools used. Subject to cuts, bruises, insect bites and stings, scrapes, burns, infections, and broken bones. Subject to strains and injuries from lifting.
