Summary

The area of consideration for this vacancy announcement is for U.S. Citizens and Non-Citizens within the Local Commuting Area of Fort Drum, NY. This includes the counties of: St. Lawrence, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis. (Military Spouse Preference (MSP) and Involuntarily Separated Military Preference (ISMP) Preference eligible candidates are included in the area of consideration.)

This position is located at the Middle School / Teen Center.

Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division (LI), is located in northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering many outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles south of the Canadian border, 85 miles north of Syracuse, and 350 miles north of New York City. It is located with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Help

  • Serves as a Child and Youth Services (CYS) Assistant Director of a Level 1 - 3 (small to large size) CYS Program with responsibility for assisting
    the supervisor in the operation of an assigned CYS program IAW all applicable regulations and standards.
  • Ensures assigned staff follow risk management procedures (i.e., abuse prevention, identification, and reporting procedures; accident
    prevention, etc.).
  • Monitors and analyzes adult/participant ratio sheets to ensure proper staffing policies are enforced.
  • Prepares work schedules for assigned staff to meet ratio and group size requirements.
  • Ensures children/youth are appropriately supervised at all times.
  • Serves as a member of the Installation Child and Youth Evaluation Team to ensure compliance with health, fire, safety, facility and program
    regulatory requirements and CYS baseline standards.
  • Assists supervisor in developing program budget.
  • Monitors food service program for assigned area ensuring compliance with all applicable Army and USDA food program policies and procedures to include proper meal components and portion sizes.
  • Implements an active program of parental involvement, providing parent education opportunities and encouraging parent observation and
    participation.
  • Works cooperatively with other CYS Managers to ensure seamless service and continuity of quality options for all children and youth.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will possess one of the following:

  • Successful completion of an undergraduate Degree that included or was supplemented by major study (at least 24 semester hours) in the fields appropriate to the position consistent with: The education must have been in youth development, youth administration, education, home economics, physical education, elementary education, special education or other fields appropriate to the position to be filled such as related behavioral science. (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE UPLOADED AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • IN ADDITION TO THE EDUCATION, THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET:
    • Experience teaching children or other work that demonstrated the ability to perform the duties of the position;
    • Ability to select, train, and supervise childcare and preschool employees, family childcare providers, or other care-giving adults;
    • Ability to develop and implement child development programs, including family day care programs, part-day preschool programs, and before and after school programs;
    • Ability to plan and organize work, analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data and recognize solutions;
    • Possess ample oral and communications skills and analytical writing skills, and
    • Ability to present ideas and proposals to a variety of audiences
OR
  • Possess a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in a subject matter field (24 semester hours) appropriate to the position (see above), plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four-year course of study described above. (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE UPLOADED AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION)
  • IN ADDITION TO THE EDUCATION, THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET:
    • Possess 3 months of directly related work experience teaching children or similar work requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position to be filled;
    • Ability to develop and implement child development programs, including family day care programs, part-day preschool programs, and before and after school programs;
    • Ability to plan and organize work, analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data and recognize solutions;
    • Possess ample oral and communications skills and analytical writing skills, and
    • Ability to present ideas and proposals to a variety of audiences.
  • EXAMPLES for Combination of Experience & Education:
    • 1 year work experience with children & youth PLUS 3 years of education (90 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above, OR
    • 2 years work experience with children & youth PLUS 2 years of education (60 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above, OR
    • 3 years work experience with children & youth PLUS 1 year of education (30 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above.
