Summary

This position is located in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the largest national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture. Its primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States related to the African American experience; to conduct scholarly research designed to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of African American history, to publish findings for both scholarly and general audiences; and to interpret historical developments through public exhibits and programs as well as digital content.

Duties

Help

Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director for Communications, the incumbent:

  • secures local, national and international media coverage of special events, exhibitions, educational programs, corporate sponsorship, gifts to the Museum, major accessions and other newsworthy events;
  • responds to media inquiries and arranges interviews between media representatives and curators, administrators and staff;
  • develops, directs and executes the brand strategy for all collateral including print and digital;
  • reviews print and digital collateral for quality, brand alignment and message consistency;
  • develops a comprehensive, integrated annual marketing plan, the campaigns, implementation timelines, execution steps and content requirements;
  • develops strategies for video marketing and implementation plan;
  • develops editorial calendar;
  • oversees projects working collaboratively and effectively across departments demonstrating teamwork;
  • analyzes and synthesizes market research, primary/secondary research, and survey data to inform marketing campaigns and promotional activities; and
  • supervises others including interviewing candidates for positions, developing performance standards, advising, counseling or instructing employees on work, and effects disciplinary measures as appropriate.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as working in a museum, cultural or historical institution that explores African American history and culture. The work experience MUST include developing, implementing and evaluating communications plans; conceptualizing and executing strategic marketing and advertising campaigns; preparing complex multi-channel editorial plans; writing and editing press releases, press kits and other written products for media consumption; writing promotional copy for advertisements, brochures, annual reports and other digital, print and marketing collateral; leading teams; and having proficiency in PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Smartsheet

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

  1. Ability to develop, implement, monitor and report on strategic communications and visibility plans in an organization, museum, historical or cultural institution, focused on African American audiences, history, culture and communities.
  2. Skill in writing and editing press releases, talking points, fact sheets, backgrounders, copy for web platforms and briefing packages for media interviews and speaking engagements.
  3. Skill in developing and executing marketing, branding and advertising plans.
  4. Skill in negotiating, preparing and managing service agreements with contractors.
  5. Ability to lead teams: develop short and long range plans, set and adjust priorities, direct and coordinate activities of staff and prepare schedules for completion of work.
