Summary

This position is located in the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG), Smithsonian Institution.

The incumbent reports to the Director of the Museum. The incumbent serves on the senior management team of the Museum, and oversees the development and communication of a strong contemporary identity and voice for the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG), the Smithsonian’s museum of international modern and contemporary art. The incumbent is charged with marketing and promoting the Museum programs, content and expertise in a manner that increases audiences and enhances the stature of the Museum. The incumbent manages departmental staff, serves as a primary writer and plans, directs and contributes to the execution of: media and public relations messages and strategies; marketing, promotional events and advertising; audience development and visitor services initiatives; development of non-scholarly marketing publications, website, signage and collateral marketing materials and internal communications as needed for the successful integration and implementation of HMSG positioning, core messages and identity.

Duties

Help

  • Responsible for the overall public profile of HMSG and its leadership, and for marketing and publicity to build awareness of and participation by diverse audiences in its programs, exhibitions and initiatives.



  • Directs and creates the Museum’s public relations program, including social media and digital platforms that reaches audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with members of the news media and art community domestically and internationally.
  • Manages department staff, and deploys resources to develop, plan and execute a comprehensive communications, marketing and audience development program for the HMSG.

Qualifications

Experience:

You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as

experience in public information or public relations in an Art Museum; leading and motivating a team of professionals in public relations, communications, marketing, design, and web and social media; developing and maintaining long and short term strategic planning, and having knowledge and understanding of modern and contemporary art. This knowledge of modern and contemporary art must be demonstrated by experience in a museum or cultural institution.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  • Knowledge of or relationships with local, national and/or international media, specializing in coverage of modern and contemporary art.
  • Skill, gained through direct experience, of at least four aspects of marketing communications: public relations, advertising, promotions, market research, publications, and digital and social media.
  • Ability to manage and edit a range of communications materials, which may include writing or supervising writers, graphic designers, researchers and contract support.
  • Knowledge of modern and contemporary art in order to translate specialized information for a range of audiences with differing levels of engagement with art.
