What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

As a Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Microbiology) within the Fish Health Section of the Western Fisheries Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Performs microbiological laboratory procedures including cell and tissue culture; bacterial, viral, and parasitic isolation, identification, and characterization.
Performs controlled laboratory-based experiments intended to determine cause-and-effect disease relationships between pathogens and their marine hosts.
Collects fish and tissue samples for parasitology and virology while onboard research vessel.
Compiles, analyzes, and summarizes laboratory data for preparation of draft reports.
Trains less senior staff on field and laboratory procedures and data collection protocols.
Please Note: Laboratory work is primarily sedentary, but outdoor work requires regular and recurring exertions such as bending, heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, pulling, or similar activities. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered while performing outdoor work. Safety gear and protective clothing are required.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Must be able to take and pass the Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within six (6) months of employment.
