Summary

The selectee for this position will serve as a Neonatologist in Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. The purpose of the position is to provide care for patients admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Camp Lejeune, NC and Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth.

A typical day in the life of a Neonatologist!

  • Serving as a physician managing a full range of cases and problems within the neonatal-perinatal sub-specialty field, including the very rare difficult cases requiring the ability to recognize rare and difficult to identify symptoms or signs.
  • Performs the most advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Develops full treatment regimens involving knowledge of new techniques, use of prolonged or complicated procedures, or advanced and delicate skills.
  • Serves as a consultant on very difficult cases to other medical practitioners and health care providers.Responsible for medical students, interns, residents and fellows assigned for training within the specialty field.

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must have at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training. AND possess a Doctor of Medicine or a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from a school in the United States or Canada that is approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of my graduation. AND have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
OR
Have at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training. AND possess a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States that is demonstrated by a permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate (for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country). (Note - be sure to include your ECFMG certificate number or fifth pathway certificate, including date awarded). AND have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, you must also have successfully completed 5 years of residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training as a physician managing a full range of cases and problems within the neonatal-perinatal sub-specialty field including cases requiring ability to recognize rare and difficult-to-identify symptoms or signs.

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification AND Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification; AND demonstrated experience in independently applying neonatal medicine theories and practices to provide expert care for a wide range of difficult neonatal diseases, especially the management of critically ill neonates. Failure to possess these items WILL result in an ineligible rating. Possession of the factor must be verifiable via your resume or support documents.

Additional information

Work requires extensive walking, standing, stretching, lifting, transporting and bending in caring for patients; the ability to influence confused patients regarding their care, and physically control or defend against emotionally ill or confused patients. Work is performed in a health care setting where there is exposure to contagious disease, radiation, infection. Gloves, gowns and masks are frequently necessary.
