Summary

This position is located in the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) which provides a public service to educational, scientific, cultural, and on occasion, commercial institutions by creating, organizing and administering exhibitions for tour and offering related technical services. The employee will carry out a comprehensive public affairs program that encompasses individual exhibitions as well as SITES’ mission as a whole.

Duties

Help

  • Plans, organizes, and evaluates SITES communication strategies, programs and materials.
  • Writes and edits promotional materials, feature stories, marketing materials and speeches/remarks for director and/or SI senior management at SITES exhibition openings and programs.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with host venues, sponsors, collaborators, partners and media outlets for promoting SITES programs and Smithsonian brands.
  • Supervises professional staff and interns, assigning work, providing guidance, training and assessing performance.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-011 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as working with media in a museum or culturally-based organization to place positive news stories, drafting communications materials, organizing press events, facilitating interviews, film, and photo shoots; overseeing interns, collaborating with other organizations on revenue-generating projects, and assisting in the development and implementation of new digital media products and platforms.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

  • Ability to use communication principles to develop new methods and approaches in planning, integrating and evaluating SITES public affairs program.
  • Knowledge of public relations policies and procedures, methods, practices, and techniques to support promotional campaigns for SITES exhibitions.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining strong relationships with Smithsonian colleagues, museums, donors and media outlets to promote SITES exhibitions and programs.
  • Ability to assist with personnel matters to include recruitment, performances and disciplinary actions when needed.
