About the Position:
Fairbanks, Alaska, with a population of 100,000, offers rich culture from fishing, hunting, camping, skiing, snowshoeing, and dog sledding; Midnight Sun Baseball; University of Alaska Nanooks and Ice Dogs hockey; the Aurora Borealis and moon-lit soaks in the Chena Hot Springs. Winter delivers snow and ice conditions from October through April with temperatures of 8 to -19°F with extreme lows of -50 plus; Summer sees temperatures in the 80s and up to 21 hours of daylight. Serves as a calibration specialist at Test, Measurement, and Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE) in the parameters of electrical, electronic, microwave, physical and dimensional standards and measurements applicable to the calibration, certification and evaluation of unusually complex high precision calibration laboratory reference standards

Duties

Help

You will serve as Precision Measurement Equipment Calibrator responsible for the following:

  • Calibrating test, measurement and diagnostic equipment(TMDE)
  • Troubleshooting and repairing TMDE
  • Collecting and analyzing calibration data
  • Implementing, modifying and developing technical procedures
  • Utilizing automated systems to document test results and prepare reports

  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.

  • The work of this position is performed in laboratories and user facilities where technicians are exposed to the hazards of high voltage, high pressure, high and low temperatures, chemicals and radiation.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Precision Measurement Equipment Calibrator without more than normal supervision. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
  • Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
  • Theory and Instruments (Electrical Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices
  • Trouble shooting


PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work may require long periods of standing or sitting along with some walking or bending. Requires frequent lifting, carrying, and handling of items weighing up to 40 pounds with occasional requirements to lift items in excess of 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in laboratories and user facilities where technicians are exposed to the hazards of high voltage, high pressure, high and low temperatures, chemicals and radiation. Calibrators must comply with all safety regulations applicable to the calibration mission.
