Duties

Help

  • Applies mathematics theories, methods and techniques to statistical process for the solution of specific problems, analysis and interpretation of statistical samples; the selection and use of statistical analysis, operations research or management analysis methods, and the correct use of appropriate computer systems and software to accomplish these assignments.
  • Designs complex samples, survey instruments, and studies.
  • Solves complex problems by developing mathematical models or other statistical methods and integrates the mathematical and statistical aspects of machine computation.
  • Conducts theoretical and experimental investigations to develop new or improve existing theories and techniques for the solution of problems that serve to expand the framework of knowledge.
  • Participates in the design, analysis and interpretation of statistical samples; the selection and use of statistical analytical, operations research or management analysis methods; and the correct use of appropriate computer systems and software to accomplish these assignments.
  • Negotiates compromises between project goals and available resources, modifying the quantitative plan as required to meet contingencies.
  • Communicates statistical concepts and results in understandable language to a variety of audiences.

Qualifications

You must meet the minimum qualification requirements as stated in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/Standards/group-stds/gs-prof.asp

Basic Requirement: A degree in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester must have been in calculus. (Note: Due to the education requirement of this position, an unofficial or official transcript must be submitted at the time of application. If transcripts are not received, you will be ineligible.)

One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required.

Specialized experience is defined as: experience that demonstrates knowledge of and ability in scientific work that involves designing, developing, and adapting mathematical, statistical, econometric, or other scientific methods; and/or adapting mathematical methods and techniques to statistical processes and research as it relates to the basic theories and science of statistics.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education is not substitutable for specialized experience for this grade level.
