Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division (LI), is located in northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering many outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles south of the Canadian border, 85 miles north of Syracuse, and 350 miles north of New York City. It is located with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Help

  • Works in-ratio 50% of the time providing breaks for assigned staff, modeling appropriate behavior, and providing program oversight and
    accountability during all hours of program operation.
  • Supervises and evaluates employees based on established performance standards as required.
  • Works with trainer and supervisor to plan, coordinate and implement activities and special events that meet the physical, social, emotional and cognitive needs of children and youth.
  • Serves as a member of the CYS Services Garrison Rapid Improvement Team as needed to ensure assigned area is in compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements leading to DoD Certification and national accreditation.
  • May be required to perform health related practices as reasonable accommodation for children with disabilities.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will possess either Option # 1 or Option #2:

Option #1

  • A 4-year college or university degree with a major course of study (24 semester hours completed) in youth development, youth administration, physical education, elementary education, secondary education, special education.
  • Experience working as a Lead Child and Youth Program Assistant, Lead Child and Youth Program Technician, Child and Youth Site Leader or as a successful graduate of an Army CYS Services/Land Grant University Intern Program or similar program.
  • The ability to select, train and supervise staff.
OR

Option #2
  • A combination of education and experience that includes at a minimum of twenty-four (24) semester hours in youth development, youth administration, physical education, elementary education, secondary education, or special education.
    • EXAMPLES for Combination of Experience & Education:
      • 1 year work experience with children & youth PLUS 3 years of education (90 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above, OR
      • 2 years work experience with children & youth PLUS 2 years of education (60 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above, OR
      • 3 years work experience with children & youth PLUS 1 year of education (30 semester hours completed) that included 24 semester hours in the fields identified above
  • Twelve (12) months of directly related work experience as a Lead Child and Youth Program Assistant, Lead Child and Youth Program Technician, Child and Youth Site Leader or as a successful graduate of an Army CYS Services/Land Grant University Intern Program or similar program.
IN ADDITION, all minimally qualified applicants will also possess the following:
  • The ability to develop and implement child and youth facility-based programs, AND
  • The ability to plan and organize work, AND
  • The ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, AND
  • The ability to gather pertinent data and recognize solutions, AND
  • The ability to present ideas and proposals to a variety of audiences, AND
  • Possess comprehensive oral communications skills and analytical writing skills
HIGHLY PREFERRED are those candidates that possess both the minimum qualifications above and:
  • Experience or knowledge of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America or 4H programs, AND/OR
  • Experience working with youth in grades 6 thru 12.
