About the Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the relief boat operator and relief crane operator for the friction lattice boom and hydraulic cranes on board the PUGET, a 104 foot, 174 gross ton, twin-screw, diesel powered snag and drift collection boat operating in the Puget Sound.

Duties

Help

You will serve as a Small Craft Operator performing a variety of duties that include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as relief boat operator, relief crane operator and deckhand to the chief boat operator on the PUGET, a self-propelled crane barge, engaged in snagging and floating debris disposal operations in Puget Sound.
  • Perform duties involved in the maintenance, repair and housekeeping of the floating plant.
  • Assist the deck crew in snagging/debris disposal operations.
  • Handle and fasten hawsers and mooring ropes to piers. 
  • Performs light rigging as required. 
  • Prepare surfaces to be painted by removing old paint, using paint remover, scraping or chipping.
  • Make regular inspections of engine room and generator room to determine that all equipment is functioning properly.
  • Assume responsibility for the operation of the vessel or cranes during the scheduled or unscheduled absence of the regular boat operator or crane operator.
  • Load and store supplies to and from the boat.

  • Must obtain USCG 200 Ton Master of Inland Vessel Lic w/i 2 yrs.
  • Must obtain Navy floater crane license w/i 6 months.
  • Pre-employment and annual physical required.
  • Pre-employment and random drug testing required.
  • Work Schedule is Mon-Thurs, 10 hr shifts

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN OUT ELEMENT: TO QUALIFY you must have the ability to do the work of a Small Craft Operator, XF-5786-09 under normal supervision. You must have the ability to perform Small Craft Operator skills to include: operating a variety of boats, work boats, or towboats, ranging in size up to 104 feet in length, line handling and electronic navigation systems.

Failure to meet the above SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbent is required to exert moderate to heavy physical effort in maintaining equipment on boat, and to handle survey equipment. Incumbent must possess depth and color perception and be able to see in low visibility conditions in order to operate boat and crane. Incumbent is required to operate a motor vehicle in order to get to and from the vessel, or transfer vessel from work site to work site.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

When functioning as the relief Master, work is normally performed inside pilothouse and while directing the deck crew time is spent on deck where there is exposure to the elements and danger of falling into river and ocean and drowning. Much of the time spent operating is in swift, shallow water, which increases dangers to operator and craft, and is subject to the hazards of sudden storms, rough water, tides, wind and abnormal currents. When serving as relief crane operator, the employee is restricted to the confines of the crane cab for long periods of times, operating various levers and pedals. Incumbent is exposed to noise in excess of 80 decibels and is required to wear hearing protection. Employee is exposed and the effects of acids, solvents, thinners and paints on a regular and recurring basis.
