Summary

About the Position:
Fort Bliss hosts a lethal combination of Infantry, Armor and Artillery capabilities. The 1st Armored Division includes the Ready First, Iron, Bulldog, Iron Eagles, Iron Steel, and the Muleskinners. Other commands on Fort Bliss include the Joint Modernization Command, the 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command, with the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and Joint Task Force North. Fort Bliss is also home to one of two active joint mobilization stations in the Department of Defense and is currently the largest joint mobilization platform.

These positions may be converted to career or career-conditional employment without further competition.

Duties

Help

You will serve as a Public Affairs Specialist performing the following duties:

  •     Keeps abreast of media trends and the interests of the general public and tailors print/social content and design accordingly.
  •     Responsible for the newspapers planning, management and operation.
  •     Performing complete editing functions of the post command information newspaper and social media.
  •     Establish working relationships with media relations stakeholders to enlist cooperation in providing the public with     information on organizational programs.
  •     Edits stories, and articles supplied by other sources to ensure compliance with regulation, policy.
  •     Determines overall scope of each issue of the newspaper, programs appropriate coverage and space for timely coverage of unique as well as recurring events well in advance of editorial deadlines for feature articles.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience producing print and or social media related products; writing and editing materials for a newspaper; maintaining cooperative relationships with representatives of the community. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-07.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge Public Affairs principles and functions
  • Knowledge of Print Journalism
  • Ability to coordinate a proactive print/social media program
  • Skill in oral communication

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-07 grade (or equivalent).
