Summary

This position is located in the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Immediate Office of the Superintendent, Department of Waterfront Activities, Kings Point, New York. The Academy is a four-year degree granting institution of higher education accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities. The mission of the Academy is to teach students how to succeed in the maritime and transportation industries or the Armed Forces, while preparing them to receive a bachelor of science degree, a merchant marine license, and an appointment as a commissioned officer on reserve or active duty in the U.S Armed Forces.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of activities needed to operate, maintain, and repair a range of boats and vessels and provide upkeep and support of the waterfront environment. There is special emphasis in this position on engineering work, specifically engine maintenance and repair duties.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional who has experience maintaining and repairing equipment found in a waterfront environment.

Help

The duties of The Marine Machinery Mechanic (Various Trades) include:

  • Marine mechanic-type duties are performed on boats and vessels. Fiberglass fabrication on boat hulls, superstructures, decks, and components involves straight and curved surfaces and interconnecting parts and components. Marine electrical and electronic systems are maintained. Wood working extends from common carpentry tasks to superior wood crafting requirements. Metal working is required to maintain the waterfront and to duplicate boating parts, repair them, or to perform other metal working projects. Operating boats and vessels within the Basin and the immediate vicinity. Crane operation are required to lift boats from the water for maintenance, repair, launching, or storage activities.
  • Dismantling, repairing, relocating, modifying, aligning and installing of a wide variety of marine machinery equipment. Repairs encompass all phases of assembly and disassembly and overhaul of motors, transmissions carburetors, electrical systems, accessories and attachments.
  • Applying a through knowledge of, and skill in, applying a variety of techniques using experienced judgment, rough sketches, blueprints, manufacturer specifications, or oral instructions. Tasks require a detailed knowledge of the operating characteristics of the machinery, equipment, and systems in questions; their functional relationships; the applicable installation and repair procedures, methods, and trade practices.
  • Maintaining and repairing gasoline cranes used for lifting boats, floats, heavy anchors, and equipment and keeping crane in a safe and operable condition. Metal working is required to maintain the waterfront and to duplicate boating parts, repair them, or to perform other metal working projects. Marine electrical and electronic system are maintained.
  • Task(s) require a detailed knowledge of the operating characteristics of the machinery, equipment, and systems in questions; their functional relationships; the applicable installation and repair procedures, methods, and trade practices.
  • Work involves installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, and lading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls and equipment.

Qualifications

To quality for the Wage Grade -10, you must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties, which includes the following:

  • You must have the ability to do the work of a Marine Machinery Mechanic (Various Trades) without more than normal supervision.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (CONTINUED):

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Physical efforts related to waterfront activities involve a range of the nature, degree, frequency, and duration of muscular effort or physical strain or hazards encountered. There is physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes. Lifts light to heavy items up to 50 pounds, seeks weight lifting assistance on heavier items. There are bodily strains related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching, or stooping for extended periods of time. At times, work is performed in tiring positions and close quarters. You will work in such positions as kneeling, stooping, standing, squatting, reaching, lifting, walking, climbing, crawling, bending, etc. You must be able to concentrate for long periods of time when reassembling components and units and when studying manuals and diagrams. Must be alert when testing equipment, when operating power tools, and maintain general awareness of moving equipment around the waterfront.

WORKING CONDITIONS: There are distinctive hazards, physical hardships, and working conditions associated with boats, vessels, and waterfront activities. Working conditions vary in such ways such as the nature of the work environment; the extent to which it includes unpleasant, disagreeable, or hazardous conditions; the degree to which such conditions are experienced; the frequency and duration of exposure; the adequacy of protective clothing and gear, safety devices, and safe trade practices; and the possible effects on the employee. Inside lighting, heating, and ventilation in work areas is considered adequate but may be subject to less than ideal conditions. Repairs onboard boats and vessels often involve cramped quarters with limited space to work. Weather conditions to which exposed when working outdoors can range from very cold to very hot, foul weather gear may be required. Dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces are encountered. Noise and vibration are present as well as gases and fumes that may require gas-free certification. There are hazards related to slippery surfaces both outside and inside. You will be required to wear safety shoes or boots at all times and shall be required to wear a floatation coat or work vest whenever working underway, afloat, overside, or during inclement weather. When working near machine and woodworking tools, you will wear protective clothing and eye protection at all times. When working near noise hazards, you will wear hearing protection at all times. When working with hazardous materials or painting materials, you will wear protective clothing, eye protection, and breathing apparatus at all times. Wear appropriate eye protection and clothing for welding work. Use appropriate safety gear and safety procedures at all times that are suitable to the work performed.
