The person selected for this position will be required to submit the Federal Interagency Medical History, Examination, and Clearance Form for Wildland Firefighters (Arduous Duty), if the form is not already on file.
The employee selected will be required to work a non-standard tour of duty that may include weekends, holidays, and night shifts.
This is a supervisory position. Employees who are initially appointed to supervisory positions must serve a probationary period of one year.

Firefighter position requirements: This position is a Secondary-Administrative Firefighter position under the Firefighter retirement system. PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet position qualification requirements, but not be eligible for the Firefighter retirement system. Firefighter retirement coverage in secondary positions depends upon the incumbents individual work history. A determination of eligibility for Firefighter retirement will be made at the time of selection. If the selected applicant is not eligible for Firefighter retirement, he/she will be placed in the regular retirement system.

A. At least one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the next lower level (equivalent to grade GS-07) in the Federal service, in at least two of the following three categories: 1) performing work that demonstrates an understanding of fire effects on cultural and natural resources, such as participating as a fire effects/monitor crew member; writing portions or sections of burn plans to include ignition sequences; serving as a field observer or lookout communicating observations; and 2) prescribed fire/fuels management activities such as serving as a fire crew member/lead completing transects or inventories of fuels and/or other vegetative data; and 3) assisting in fire management operations that included at least 4 of the following: *mobilization and dispatch coordination, *fire prevention, *training, *logistics, *equipment development and deployment, *fire communication systems, and *suppression or preparedness.

B. Successful completion of at least one and one half full years of graduate education from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to fire science, fire management, biological science, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry or related discipline.

C. A combination of experience and education to equal 100% of the requirements of the position.

(2) Prescribed fire/fuels management experience in activities such as: Professional forest or range inventory methods and procedures (e.g., Brown's planar intercept for dead and down fuels; live fuel loading assessments), or analysis of fuel loadings and determination of appropriate fuel treatment methods and programming, or evaluating prescribed fire plans for fire management plans to ensure fire containment is possible and identify appropriate suppression contingencies if containment is not obtained. (3) Fire management operations analyzing and applying fire management strategies, plus experience in at least four of the following activities: Mobilization and dispatch coordination; fire prevention; training; logistics; equipment development and deployment; fire communications systems; suppression and preparedness.

B. Successful completion of at least two full years of graduate education or Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to fire science, fire management, biological science, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry or related discipline.

C. A combination of education and experience to equal 100% of the requirement for the position.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
The work is strenuous, requiring climbing, walking and running over uneven terrain, bending, hacking through underbrush, and lifting and carrying heavy equipment weighing over 50 pounds. There is potential for burns, dehydration, and smoke inhalation. Work requires the use of specialized protective clothing and gear. The employee may conduct some activities from low flying aircraft and helicopters. Firefighting is extremely arduous and hazardous. The work requires strenuous physical exertion, including carrying heavy objects, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, hacking through underbrush and using heavy tools for long periods of time. Most work is performed outdoors in a forest and/or rangeland setting. Terrain ranges from flat and swampy to steep and rocky and is often covered with thick, tangled vegetation or various trees and grasses. Temperature extremes, smoke, and dust are frequently severe. The hazardous nature of the work requires the use of protective gear and clothing (boots, hard hat, nomex clothing, gloves, etc). The work is typically performed in isolated locations, which are often away from roads and water sources; camping is necessary for extended periods.
