As a POLICE OFFICER, GS-0083-8, your work is to lead, manage, and perform security force (SF) activities in direct support of the United States Nuclear Enterprise; weapon systems and physical security; law and order; military working dog; combat arms; and area security operations. The work directs the control and operations of firing ranges; inspects, repairs, and maintains ground weapons. It enforces law, maintains law and order, preserves the peace, and protects life and civil rights within the jurisdiction of military installations. Occupational Series GS-0083 concerns police work that protects nuclear and conventional weapons systems and other critical resources. The work concerns air base defense functions contributing to the force protection mission. Tasks include defending and protecting personnel, equipment, and resources from hostile forces throughout the base security zone of military installations. The duties operate in various field environments, performs individual and team patrol movements, tactical drills, battle procedures, convoys, military operations other than war, anti terrorism duties, and other special duties. The duties cover operating communications equipment, vehicles, intrusion detection equipment, individual and crew-served weapons, and other special purpose equipment. In addition, police work involves self-aid buddy care and life saving procedures as first responders to accident and disaster scenes. It provides armed response and controls entry to installations and protection level resources. The work involves detecting and reporting the presence of unauthorized personnel and activities; and, implementing security reporting and alerting systems. The duties require the enforcement and adherence to the standards of conduct, discipline, and adherence to laws and directives. The work directs vehicle and pedestrian traffic; investigates motor vehicle accidents, minor crimes, and incidents; and operates speed measuring, drug and alcohol, and breath test devices. It leads, manages, supervises, and implements ground weapons training programs. Duties involve the control and safeguarding of arms, ammunition, and equipment; and, instructs ground weapons qualification training. The tasks provides guidance on weapons placement to security forces and ground defense force commanders. The position inspects ground weapons and replaces unserviceable parts and analyzes malfunctions by inspection and serviceability testing. It uses precision gauges, testing instruments, and special tools to adjust parts and operating mechanisms. The position requires function-fires of weapons for accuracy and serviceability. It controls and operates firing ranges and associated facilities to include supervising construction and rehabilitation. The position employs military working dogs to support worldwide security force operations and executive agency requirements to include nuclear, Presidential support, federal law enforcement and national strategic programs. Ensures health and welfare of military working dogs. Trains handlers and military working dogs on all aspects of military working dog training.
