Summary

About the Position:
Perform a broad range of archival professional tasks to support development and maintenance of documents collections and materials held by the US Army Center of Military History (CMH), especially those related to Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, and other contingency and combat operations.

This position is Term.  The original appointment will be made Not to Exceed 30 September 2019.  The position may be extended, not to exceed a total of 6 years.  This position may be converted to permanent without further competition.

Duties

Help

The incumbent of this position will: 

  • Serve as an expert on the content and locations of materials contained in Center for Military History archival collections.   
  • Review, organize and analyze historical collections to create usable collections and detailed finding aid/indexes.
  • Develop catalogues, guides, inventories, reference information papers or introductory narratives to collections.
  • Assist in planning and affecting a comprehensive program for the full utilization and exploitation of Army records and manuscripts in the historical research and writing projects.
  • Assist the Branch Chief and the CMH digital archivist with the acquisition, organization, description, accessibility, and preparation of classified and unclassified archival materials for digitization.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

or

Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

IN ADDITION TO MEETING BASIC EDUCATION ABOVE, APPLICANTS MUST ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENT:

A. Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal Service that demonstrates the following: Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Experience involving professional archival work in appraising, accessioning, arranging, describing, preserving, publishing or providing reference service from public records and historic documents; and 2) Experience in planning and executing a comprehensive program to archive large amounts of information in various media formats to make it accessible to researchers.

B. Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree orPh.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited college or university(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

C. Have some specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have less than two years of graduate-level education as described in B. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 36. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify) (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following area:

·   Knowledge of archival principals and techniques.

·   Ability to provide archival research support.

·   Skill in cataloging record collections.

·   Ability to communicate in writing
