Duties

Help

This position is located in the Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC).

As a Paramedic, you will respond to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injuries and illnesses that may potentially be life-threatening.  You will be required to make independent preliminary assessments of the patient's condition and select the most appropriate protocol for the given circumstances.  You will make modifications to the protocol as necessary and within prescribed limits. You will conduct a complete examination of the patient to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of his/her condition. You will also be required to determine if the patient can be moved and the best way to transport them to the appropriate facility for continued treatment. You will be responsible for prioritizing treatment for patients with multiple issues.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
   •Position requires the individual to complete a Childcare Background Security Investigation Line of Sight  

     (LOSS) .
   •Must be able to possess and maintain a valid unrestricted stateside driver's license.
   •Must be able to possess and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification from the

     American Heart Association or Military Training Network.
   •Must be National Registry Paramedic(NRP) certified or obtain and maintain certification within one year of

     employment.
   •Must be New York State Certified Paramedic before Entry on Duty and Maintain a Current Status.
   •Position may require rotating shift work, to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
   •Position requires work in inclement weather conditions. 
   •National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training required within six months of entry on duty.
   •Acquire and maintain current Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advance Life Support 

    PALS) certificate within six months of hire date.
   •Position requires screening for required immunizations and for evidence of tuberculosis. Centers for

     Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) 

     commendations.
   •Must successfully complete pre-placement and annual medical examinations.
   •Position may require use of protective clothing and/or uniform.
   •Position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual

    seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be 

    required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations.
   •Acquire and maintain current emergency vehicle operating certificate (EVOC) training within six months of

    hire date

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience to the GS-07: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience (equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-06)) which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized Experience is defined as; responding to accidents or emergencies involving injuries and/or illnesses, conducting examinations to obtain patient vital signs, initiating intravenous (IV) therapy, and/or operating a patient transport vehicle.

Selective Placement Factor:  This position requires a New York State Department of Health (NYS DoH) issued Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) certification. (Provide document at time of application)


This position also requires possession of a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. (Provide document at time of application) 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  •  Knowledge of Patient Treatment Protocol
  • Skill in Administering Emergency Medical Techniques
  • Ability to Provide Emergency Care

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below: 

 
EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of at least one year of graduate-level education from an accredited college or university that is directly related to the work of the position, such as Emergency Medicine. (NOTE: You MUST provide a copy of your transcripts).
 
 OR
 
Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (as indicated above) and specialized experience (as indicated above), are also qualifying. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify).
