What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

As a Biological Science Lab Technician (Microbiology) in the Fish Health Section of the Western Fisheries Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Designs and completes laboratory experiments including the expression of recombinant proteins and characterizing immunological tools for freshwater fish.
Tests fish immune responses by quantitative RTPCR and flow cytometric analyses.
Maintains complete experimental records, analyzes the data, and presents preliminary conclusions.
Trains other staff in microbiological and immunological techniques sych as QPCR, western blot, and ELISA.
Prepares draft reports of work accomplished to be included in publications, reports, or presentations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Laboratory work requires sitting or standing in one place for extended periods of time, bending, lifting, including other similar activities. Good physical hand and eye coordination is required. Laboratory work is typically conducted indoors in both wet and dry laboratories. Due to working in and around chemicals, employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, etc.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for the position, you must meet one of the following requirements:
If you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position.
Examples of GS-06 level assignments include: 1) Collecting invertebrate tissue samples for microbiology or histological examination; compiling and summarizing data from surveys, biological evaluations, and pilot tests; and/or running routine computer programs and checking resulting data for inconsistencies; 2) Conducting molecular biological techniques such as transformation or transfection, nucleic acid extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and molecular cloning; 3) Utilizing disease detection systems such as western blotting and/or flow cytometry in support of research on fish immune responses.
For examples 1-3, a designated authority initially provided direction on the priorities and objectives for work assignments and assisted with any unusual situations that did not have clear precendents.
**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 1 year of appropriate graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics or other field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required 1 year of specialized experience if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of this position.
