The area of consideration for this vacancy announcement is for U.S. Citizens and Non-Citizens within the Local Commuting Area of Fort Drum, NY. This includes the counties of: Saint Lawrence, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis. This position is located within Child, Youth, and School Services Division.

Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division (LI), is located in northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering many outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles south of the Canadian border, 85 miles north of Syracuse, and 350 miles north of New York City. It is located with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Fort Drum's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Division is a comprehensive network of quality support and leisure services that enhances the lives of Soldiers, Civilians, Families, military retirees and other eligible participants. Duties

Help

  • Plans and coordinates the preparation of meals based on master menus.
  • Makes decisions regarding recipe adjustments for the number of servings and size of equipment to use.
  • Delivers and collects meal/snack carts from facility areas to kitchen.
  • Provides food delivery methods to support appropriate age-group eating style (e.g., family style dining in CDCs).
  • Meets with food and nutrition specialists to coordinate food orders, menu plans, infant feeding plans, and to determine substitutions for special diets.
  • Follows health and safety precautions to ensure safe food preparation, storage, and kitchen sanitation.

Conditions of Employment:

  3. Ability to occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 50 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers,
  4. Ability to perform work that requires travel to on and off post locations,
  5. Willingness and availability to work schedules that include irregular hours, evenings, and/or weekends,
  6. Ability to perform duties that involve working both indoors and outdoors,
  7. Within the first six (6) months of employment must obtain, and then maintain, a Food Protection Manager Certification.
  8. Immunizations will be required in accordance with current Army and DoD policy including annual influenza vaccinations.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will possess all of the following:

  • Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing,
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of a full range of food preparation techniques needed to:
    • Develop and revise standardized recipes,
    • coordinate cooking in large quantities using complex recipes and varied cooking methods,
    • prepare foods for special/modified diets (i.e., diabetic exchanges, low sodium, food allergies),
    • and instruct lower-level cooks
  • Experience using a variety of commercial food service tools and equipment to include cleaning and sanitation practices,
  • Basic math skills needed to modify recipes for large quantities and to determine portion sizes.
