Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Department of Maintenance and Repair, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. Midshipmen in residence at the Academy number approximately 1,000. The physical plant of the Academy consists of over 82 acres of grounds, 46 buildings (over 909,000 square feet of floor space) consisting of administration buildings, officers' residences, a library, classrooms, a chapel, cadet residence buildings, athletic fields and grandstand, parking areas, piers, floats and gangways, a considerable number of sailing and power craft, a garage with 22 motor vehicles of all types, a steam and hot water generating plant, various shops used for maintenance, repair and fabrication of parts and units, and such features as lawns, shrubs, hedges, and flower beds, a greenhouse and swimming pools. In addition, the Academy provides administrative space for several tenant operations from other Government agencies.

As Supervisor, you will be engaged in the fabrication and repair of high grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and furniture repair and replacement of wooden parts to match existing parts, delicate embellishments and moldings etc., along with carpentry installation, repair, renovation, design, and maintenance of buildings. You will direct and work with a Leader, five (5) woodcrafters, and at times contractors. Give general instructions to the subordinates and contractors as assignments are received from the Head, Dept. of Maintenance & Repair. Supervise through setting pace and demonstrating work methods appropriate for task and assure all required equipment and tools are appropriate for the required task. You will also be responsible for the continuing production of the subordinates and contractors assigned for the quality of performance.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced Wood Crafter Supervisor who has experience performing supervisory work along with Wood Crafting and Carpentry work which involves making and repairing high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and furniture, and in constructing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials.

Help

The Wood Crafter Supervisor:

  • Supervises, directs, and assigns work to a Woodcrafter Leader and subordinates who are also woodcrafters and at times contractors.
  • Must be able to use a wide range of hand and power woodworking tools, machines, and produce high quality cabinetry and other wooden items with precise detail fit.
  • Must be able to interpret plans, blueprints, sketches, and insure accuracy of interlocking parts: make templates and patterns; visualize the item to be made and check for dimension consistency; develop curved, contoured, and shaped surfaces and features such as inlays, scrollwork, marquetry, carving miniature parts, friezes, matched panels, matched contours, and complex joints.
  • Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (e.g., technical orders).
  • Performs work and supervises a work crew in the maintenance, repair and new construction on buildings including fitting and hanging exterior and interior doors, double hung windows, casement windows, repairs to all types of roofs, tarring and waterproofing; glazing, puttying and caulking of windows, doors and concrete work.
  • Plans and lays out the work to be done, reads and interprets plans, blueprints, drawings, and sketches and visualizes the end product required; and develops curved, contoured, and shaped surfaces and features such as inlays, scroll work, parquetry, carving, miniature parts, friezes and matched panels.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • MEDICAL EXAM: Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.
  • SHIFTS: This position requires working on various shifts (days and nights) including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays as necessary.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation is required.
  • You must be able to handle objects/equipment averaging 45 pounds in weight.
  • DRIVERS LICENSE: Must possess a current and valid state operator’s motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.
  • SUPERVISORY PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year supervisory probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications for the position are based on the education, training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.


FOR THE WAGE GRADE 10, you must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of a Wood Crafter Supervisor.

  • You must have the ability to lead, supervise, or evaluate the performance of others in the trade.

Additional Conditions of Employment:

  • PHYSICAL EFFORTS: You must be capable of making frequent inspections of the Academy to observe more closely, situations requiring varying solutions. You must have no fear of heights since assignments require climbing up long ladders to inspect roofs, steel framing, Mariner's Chapel steeple, and other high points of Academy structures. You must be able to crawl through and into crawl spaces and tunnels to inspect underground foundations. During low tide, you will inspect under piers wearing boots and coveralls. During heavy rain or wind storms, you must be able to inspect flooded areas, damaged utilities.

  • WORKING CONDITIONS: There is a danger of falling from ladders or scaffolds, from tools dropped by subordinates, and possible eye or hand injuries while operating power equipment. You may at times be required to be present and assist in various Academy emergencies as snow storms, ice storms, hurricanes or heavy winds where damage has occurred to buildings, piers, utilities and other Academy facilities.
