Duties

Help

  • Provides oversight of the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit in the absence of senior staff.
  • Maintains and monitors a 3,000 gallon coral reef exhibit, a 1,500 gallon mangrove exhibit, and four 500 gallon exhibits.
  • Monitors and upkeeps the exhibit’s mechanical systems and water chemistry parameters, and the daily care of captive animals.
  • Follows a variety of opening/closing procedures to ensure the proper health and safety of the live exhibits.
  • Participates in field operations related to collection of specimens or in the procurement of specimens from other sources.
  • Conducts tours and briefings for the public, visiting scientists, or other professionals.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as the care and maintenance of live marine specimens and equipment necessary to maintain the ecosystem exhibits.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: 4-year above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 hours of courseswork in a related field.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of the required education may meet the qualifications.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  1. Knowledge of marine and aquarium sciences and animal husbandry.
  2. Ability to care for live specimens in an exhibit setting.
  3. Knowledge of water chemistry and aquarium equipment.
  4. Ability to work with volunteers and staff in an exhibit setting.
  5. Knowledge of marine biology, collecting techniques and identification of marine species.
  6. Ability to effectively communicate marine related topics to a variety of audiences including general, educational and scientific groups.
