This is an Excepted Service, Schedule D, 213.3112(a)(2), position.
To be eligible for a Pathways Program internship, you must meet the following requirements:
•You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on at least a half-time basis with a minimum 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
•Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution or state-approved home school. These may include high schools, colleges, universities, technical; trade, vocational or business schools and state approved home school secondary and post-secondary programs.
•Qualifying certificate programs must have completed four years of post high school leading to a Bachelors Degree or  equivalent degree.•Educational institutions must be accredited by organizations recognized by the U. PATHWAYS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides the student with work experience directly related to their academic studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion.
CONVERSION: This appointment is anticipated to continue until the student's education program requirements have been completed, at which time the individual may, at the agency's discretion, be converted to a term appointment.  There is no guarantee for conversion.

WORK SCHEDULE/POSITION DURATION:   This position is a full time position, when academic schedule has a brake for the season and/or our agency and student will agree on a formally-arranged schedule of school and work that does not interfere with the student's academics or performance.You may be required to work weekends. The anticipated Entrance on Duty (EOD) May 2017.

DUTIES:
Provides reference service to archival researchers in person and remotely, documents use of collections, and provides archival duplication services to researchers.
Processes (arranges and describes) archival collections, catalogs archival collections, and produces finding aids for archival collections.Freeze-treats, cleans, rehouses, inventories, and accessions incoming archival and other museum collections.
Serves as a team member on other archival and museum collection management tasks and projects along with other collections management staff.This position is located in Calumet, Michigan, at the Lake Superior Collection Management Center, a full-service museum and archives collection management provider for three national park units: Isle Royale National Park, Keweenaw National Historical Park, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. These three park units preserve and interpret important aspects of the Lake Superior region's prehistory; aboriginal and settlement history; maritime, commercial fishing, mining, labor, and industrial history; bedrock and glacial geology; and Lake Superior, inland lake and stream, and forest ecosystems.  These three national park units provide today's visitors a Northwood's escape into history, nature, and recreation. The purpose of this position is to perform a full range of complex archival support work, with an emphasis on providing reference service at the Lake Superior Collection Management Center.  Some limited travel may be required.
AREA INFORMATION:
Calumet is located in the center of the Keweenaw Peninsula, which is roughly fifteen miles wide, and extends nearly one hundred miles into Lake Superior.  The area is noted for its rugged natural beauty, temperate four-season climate, abundant historic and cultural attractions, friendly locals, and off-the-beaten-track character.  The Calumet area has a population of approximately 6,000 people, with amenities including a hospital, schools, and some shopping.  The Cities of Houghton and Hancock are located approximately 12 miles south of Calumet and are full-service communities.  Higher education services are available at Michigan Technological University and Gogebic Community College in Houghton and Finlandia University in Hancock.  Park Housing is not available.  Housing is available in Calumet and surrounding communities for both rental and purchase.  Summers are mild; daytime temperatures range from 65-90 degrees.  Hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and camping are popular summertime recreational activitiesWinters are snowy and mild, with average annual snowfalls of 250 inches, and temperatures ranging from 0-30 degrees.  Winter recreational activities include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items ( reports, drawings, and boxes) must be lifted or moved on a routine basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is usually perfomed in a museum storage area, work space, research room, or office setting with moderate risks. The incumbent may work with potentially dangerous collections that have biological contamination, such as mold, insects, or vermin, requiring protective dust masks, gloves, and labrotaory coats.

  • You will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment.
  • You will also be required to maintain your student status as attending at least half-time, attending an accredited education institution, seeking a degree or certificate, and having a 2.0 GPA or higher.
  • You will be required to provide student documentation every grading period to your supervisor to demonstrate your student status. Failure to provide this information may result in the termination of your internship.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959 must complete Pre-Appointment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration
  • New employees of the Department of the Interior must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of net pay.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Thursday, April 27, 2017.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 level. Experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: providing reference service in person and remotely, documenting use of collections, scanning archival material for reference use, processing, arranging, rehousing, describing, and cataloging archival collections, accessioning archival or other museum collections or other museum registration tasks, and performing archival research. OR

have completed 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree..  One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school you attended has determined to represent one year of study. If this information cannot be obtained from your school, we will consider 30 semester/45 quarter hours to be equal to one year of full-time study.  You may also qualify under education with Superior Academic Achievement; (1) Class Standing- applicant graduated in upper third of graduating class, (2) Grade-Point-Average- GPA of 3.0 or higher out of possible 4.0, or (3) Honor Society Membership.
