The position is located in the Driver Training Branch (DTB), Driver and Firearms Training Division (DFT), Office of Artesia Operations (OAO), Regional and International Training Directorate (RITD), FLETC, Artesia, NM. The selectee will serve as a driver instructor in the assigned program/course areas of law enforcement within the DTB and is involved in planning and conducting classroom, laboratory, and/or field instruction sessions as part of the DTB training programs.

Being a Law Enforcement Specialist (Driver Instructor) makes you a valuable member of the FLETC team and mission. The selected individual will serve as an instructor in the DTB program/course areas covering subject-matter which involves highly specialized knowledge and skill in the handling and use of a variety of law enforcement vehicles and the accompanying circumstances for their usage. Physical Demands: This work requires considerable physical activity when demonstrating vehicle operating techniques. This work requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, or crouching in positions that may be tiring or uncomfortable. There is the need to enter, exit, and operate vehicles in a safe manner during high speed, hazardous, and often times night conditions. Travel to field locations to coordinate training activities may be involved.
Work Environment: The normal work place is a classroom or office and inside/outside sites containing vehicles. The position requires exposure to varying climate and environmental conditions including both cold and warm weather conditions and/or exposure to high levels of noise and dangerous substances. Appropriate safety practices will be utilized at all times. Safety gear, such as hearing and eye protection, will be used when needed.
This is a drug testing position which requires a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon favorable results. The employee will also be subject to random drug testing.
The selectee must be able to pass and maintain FLETC instructor certification.
The selectee may be required to travel to remote sites to provide on-site training.
The selectee will be subject to a safety physical exam in compliance with occupational requirements of the position.
The selectee must possess and maintain valid driver's licensure requirements.
The selectee must pass an initial driver's proficiency and practical exercise with a score of 80%. The practical exercise includes demonstrating proper lines of travel, skid control on multiple platforms, proper braking and acceleration, and precision driving. The selectee must also successfully complete a written exam pertaining to vehicle dynamics with a minimum score of 80%.
This position is subject to the requirements of the Lautenberg Act which prohibits the appointment of persons convicted of state or federal misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence into positions requiring the handling or possession of firearms or ammunition.
All employees are required to participate in the Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer DD/EFT for salary payments.
