Initiates preliminary installation design. Meets with curators to design and layout temporary and permanent exhibitions. Researches background aspects of proposed exhibitions including cultural background and architectural inspirations. Researches independent contractors, cabinet makers, fabricators, mechanical engineers, mount makers. Travels to research work of any trades that may be used in permanent gallery spaces or temporary exhibitions.
Designs spaces and components for exhibitions, including rooms, cases, pedestals and baffles. Produces design development and construction documents. Prepares architectural working drawings packages and specifications for the purposes of contract bidding and construction. Works on lighting design and incorporates information into design packages. Researches special materials needed for construction such as molding, Plexiglas, hardwood, fabrics. Coordinates and maintains information of materials used. Determines material compatibility, environmental stability of cases and appropriate humidity levels for the specific objects. Coordinates with facilities management and conservation on the evaluation of HVAC system in the designated galleries. Coordinates sales areas and furniture
Determines when there is a need to consult a structural engineer for unusual or complex installations. Works with vendors and employees to determine transport bearing capacity and detailing for heavy sculpture. Coordinates with Lenders and lending institutions. Reviews loan requirements for conservation, mounts/armatures, framing and security. Works to design proper security, including cameras and detailing cases for specific sensors or alarms.
Works closely with production coordinators to oversee schedules and work for demolition and construction of spaces and galleries. The incumbent must be flexible and skilled in handling a variety of assignments simultaneously, at times under tight deadlines.

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1010-12. This requires at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in responsibility to the federal GS-11 level, designing architectural spaces and exhibitions for a museum or similar cultural institution.
