    Responsibilities

    NIH Student Trainees perform duties in one of the Institutes or Centers in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH Student Trainees receive on-the-job- training while pursuing their educational degree. Assignments are aimed at developing the employee's skills and knowledge to progressively perform more difficult duties.  
     
    As a NIH Student Trainee (Engineering) you will:

    • Assist professional engineers and/or technicians in performing technical engineering work.  Provide technical support and assistance.
    • Assist in assembly, installation, or operation of equipment, instruments, or facilities.
    • Participate in testing activities, including the recording and proper interpretation of routine test results.
    • Conduct basic field observations as well as obtain, identify, handle and store material samples.

    Fields of study for NIH Student Trainees (Engineering) may include, but are not limited to:  
    • Architecture Engineering
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Civil Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Industrial Engineering
    • Computer Engineering
