NIH Student Trainees (Bio Science Lab Tech) perform duties in one of the Institutes or Centers in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH Student Trainees receive on-the-job training while pursuing their educational degree. Assignments are aimed at developing the employee's skills and knowledge to progressively perform more difficult duties.
As an NIH Student Trainee (Biological Science Laboratory Technician) you will:
Perform a variety of standard and non-standard tests, examinations, and procedures in support of one or more higher-level technicians/scientists
Perform delicate manipulative work using specially designed tubes, glassware, and equipment
Calibrate, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment which may include routine preparation and production of reagents, antigens, buffers, vaccines, and/or other biological material
Prepare and maintain detailed and precise records of experiments
Record instrument readings and/or takes measurements
Assist with compilation, justification, and refinement of resulting data
Conduct literature searches of identified topics relevant to the research being done
Position is subject to a background investigation.
Must be at least 16 years old by closing date.
Must be a U.S. citizen prior to conversion to a career-conditional appt.
Must meet education requirements (see Qualifications section below)
Must have obtained and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service. If under the age of 18, registration is required prior to your 18th birthday.

Qualifications
To qualify for the GS-1: You must be enrolled in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program.
To qualify for the GS-2: You must have completed the requirements for a high school diploma or GED.
To qualify for the GS-3: You must have completed at least one (1) full year of post high school education.
To qualify for the GS-4: You must have completed at least two (2) full academic years of post high school study or an associate's degree.
Special Provisions for Student Trainees with Previous Related Education or Experience: Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.
Education
You must submit a copy of your transcripts. Unofficial transcripts are accepted in the application; however, official transcripts will be required prior to receiving an official offer. If you are enrolled for the Spring 2017 semester and do not have a transcript, please provide an acceptance or enrollment letter with your application (e.g. a graduating high school student that is enrolled for a Bachelor's degree program for Fall 2017 must provide proof of acceptance). A note about certificate programs: Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institute and must be equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study. The certificate program must also be a part of an accredited college-level, technical, vocational, trade, or business school curriculum.
You must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. We do not round. GPA is based on current enrollment.

This position is a temporary NIH Internship position with a not-to-exceed (NTE) date of September 30, 2017. Managers will have the option to extend these appointments on a case-by-case basis.
NIH Interns must work 640 hours prior to graduation in order to be eligible to convert. NIH Interns and their supervisors must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement which outlines expectations for the internship prior to entrance on duty. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 of higher on a 4.0 scale is required throughout the duration of the program.
This announcement can be used to fill a variety of scientific support positions such as: Biological Science Technician (0404), Health Specialist (0601), Public Health Analyst (0685), and Health Technician (0640). Non-competitive conversion may be made to either a one-grade or two-grade interval position, depending on the agency's needs. An individual participating in the Internship Program who otherwise meets the Program requirements for conversion (i.e., work hours, satisfactory performance, educational requirements, training completed, etc.) may be converted to a position that has an established career ladder. While conversion is not guaranteed, Student Trainees, with U.S. citizenship, may be converted to a career-conditional appointment (permanent, or to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of all program requirements specified by the Pathways Participant Agreement.
Students graduating in May or June 2017 and are not enrolled for a new degree-seeking program after graduation will be rated ineligible for this position.
