Duties

Help

NIH Student Trainees perform duties in one of the Institutes or Centers in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH Student Trainees receive on-the-job training while pursuing their educational degree. Assignments are aimed at developing the employee's skills and knowledge to progressively perform more difficult duties.

As an Student Trainee (Administrative Support), you may:

  • Establish and maintain office files. 
  • Receive incoming calls and visitors. 
  • Provide callers and visitors with general information. 
  • Prepare a variety of standardized documents from rough draft and/or oral instructions. 
  • Process and distribute mail to appropriate individuals. 
  • Develop documents using a variety of office automation applications.
  • Perform special projects.

  • Must be at least 16 years old by closing date.
  • Position is subject to a background investigation.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen prior to conversion to a career-conditional appt.
  • Must meet education requirements (see Qualifications section below).
  • Must have obtained and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service. If under the age of 18, registration is required prior to your 18th birthday.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-1: You must be enrolled in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program. 

To qualify for the GS-2: You must have completed the requirements for a high school diploma or GED. 

To qualify for the GS-3: You must have completed at least one (1) full year of post high school education.

To qualify for the GS-4: You must have completed at least two (2) full years of post high school education or completed the requirements for an associate's degree.

To qualify for the GS-5:  You must have completed four (4) academic years of post high school education leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

To qualify for the GS-6:  You must demonstrate in your resume, at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to a GS-05 in the Federal Government (obtained in either the private or public sector).  Examples of qualifying experience include: , etc.

To qualify for the GS-7:  You must have completed one (1) full academic year of graduate level education OR eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.  To be eligible under Superior Academic Achievement at the GS-07 level you must meet one of the following requirements a) graduating within the upper third of the graduating class in a college, university, or major subdivision such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; b) having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; c) being elected for membership in a national scholastic honor society.

Special Provisions for Student Trainees with Previous Related Education or Experience:   Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.

Education

You must submit a copy of your transcripts.  Unofficial transcripts are accepted in the application; however, official transcripts will be required prior to receiving an official offer.  If you are enrolled for the Fall 2017 semester and do not have a transcript, please provide an acceptance or enrollment letter with your application (e.g. a graduating high school student that is enrolled for a Bachelor's degree program for Fall 2017 must provide proof of acceptance).  Applicants who have completed their education outside the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an accredited organization.  Additionally, the student must provide a copy of the evaluation at the time of application.

Superior Academic Achievement: When claiming SAA, the applicant must provide supplementary evidence to verify SAA (e.g. transcripts).

To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis in an accredited educational institution.  These institutions include (but are not limited to):

  • High School
  • College (including 4-year colleges/universities, community college, and junior college)
  • Professional, Technical, Vocational, and Trade School
  • Advanced Degree Program
  • Certificate Program
  • Other qualifying educational institutions

A note about certificate programs: Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institute and must be equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study. The certificate program must also be a part of an accredited college-level, technical, vocational, trade, or business school curriculum.

You must possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. We do not round. GPA is based on current enrollment.

Additional information

This announcement accepts applicants during the open period: March 27, 2017 - March 31, 2017; however, there will be a 400 applicant cut-off.  This announcement will close at 11:59PM EST on the day the 400th application is received.  Early submission of your application is highly encouraged.


This position is a temporary NIH Student Trainee position with a not-to-exceed (NTE) date of September 30, 2017.  Managers will have the option to extend these appointments on a case-by-case basis.


NIH Student Trainees must work 640 hours prior to graduation in order to be eligible to convert.  NIH Student Trainees and their supervisors must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement which outlines expectations for the Student Trainee prior to entrance on duty.  A cumulative GPA of 3.0 of higher on a 4.0 scale is required throughout the duration of the program.

While conversion is not guaranteed, Student Trainees, with U.S. citizenship, may be converted to a career-conditional appointment (permanent, or to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of all program requirements specified by the Pathways Participant Agreement.


Students graduating in May or June 2017 and are not enrolled for a new degree-seeking program after graduation will be rated ineligible for this position.


We are unable to pay relocation expenses.
