Duties

Help

As an Archives Technician, you will:

  • Arrange and describe contents of archival and library materials.
  • Catalog archival materials.
  • Obtain, move, store, label and file holdings within prescribed formats and established processes.
  • Support acquisition and distribution of archival materials.
  • Pull and re-shelf archival and library material.
  • Maintain neatness and cleanliness of holding shelves.
  • Understand archival methods and procedures to assure proper placement of archival holdings.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) organizing contents of archival collections, 2) performing Inventory of archival and/or library materials, and 3) assisting in preparation of finding aids. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Skill in Utilizing Automated Equipment to Apply General Archival Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Archival Methods, Procedures, and Techniques
  • Ability to Communicate
  • Ability to Organize

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:

Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

  • Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
