Summary

This position is located in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the largest national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture. Its primary purposes are to acquire, maintain and preserve objects which document social, cultural, political, military, technological and scientific developments in the United States related to the African American experience; to conduct scholarly research designed to make significant contributions to the body of knowledge in the field of African American history, to publish findings for both scholarly and general audiences; and to interpret historical developments through public exhibits and programs as well as digital content.

Help

The incumbent serves as a Technical Information Specialist in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The purpose of this position is to provide reference, instruction, and research assistance to museum visitors/researchers in the Robert Frederick Smith Explore Your Family History Center (EYFHC), and at times to the NMAAHC curatorial and education staff in support of their programs. The incumbent reports to the Robert F. Smith Fund Program Manager. Duties include the following:

  • providing comprehensive reference and research services in Genealogy research, particularly in the subjects of African American and African Diaspora family history that will be of interest to museum visitors and researchers, and to the staff of the NMAAHC;
  • assisting with the collection development activities of the EYFHC by helping to identify resources focusing on the subject areas of genealogy and African American family history;
  • producing and/or promoting information about the EYFHC resources, bibliographies, user guides, and reference materials;
  • assisting with outreach efforts that may include promoting collections and services through exhibits, programming, publications, social media, and other electronic means; and
  • assisting the Genealogy Specialist with special projects, such as the Freedmen’s Bureau Records project.

Qualifications

All applicants must meet these Basic Requirements:

Education: A full 4-year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with major study in the subject-matter field of the position to be filled. OR Experience: Four years of experience that provided a knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, and terminology of a discipline or subject-matter field; an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in the subject-matter field; and where appropriate, ability to read and comprehend nontechnical material in one or more foreign languages. Such experience must have been equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4-year college curriculum. OR a combination of education and experience as described above.

In addition to meeting basic qualifications applicants must have: 2 full years of graduate level education related to the position or master's or equivalent graduate degree, related to the position.

OR

Specialized Experience: To qualify, you must have the equivalent of one
year of full-time experience in the following: providing reference and research support for researchers, and coordinating outreach activities and special projects that promote the use of resources in a research center, library, or similar organization.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid work on the same basis as for paid experience. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. To
receive credit for such experience you must indicate clearly the nature of the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the average number of hours per week spent in such employment on your online resume.

Note: Your specialized experience must have been in a position(s) equivalent to duties for the occupation at the next lower grade level for the position being filled as defined by applicable Federal standards.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of resources and records critical in the African American genealogical process (slave records, plantation records, etc.) as well as common genealogical sources.
  2. Skill in clarifying research queries and assisting clientele in developing research goals.
  3. Ability to instruct clientele in the use of genealogy-related resources, and provide training in end-user search systems.
  4. Ability to analyze both research and exhibition support needs and the needs of the research clientele who depend on this research.
