Summary

The position is located in Educational Outreach Division of the Scholarly and Educational Programs Directorate, in the National & International Outreach Service Unit. The incumbent will report directly to the Director of Educational Outreach.

The purpose of this position is to help develop and present content for the Library's online and in- person educational outreach programs and projects. The incumbent will work on such projects as a member of a team.

The Educational Outreach Division was established to shape the Library of Congress historical collections to the needs of the K-16 educational community. The goal of the office is to raise public awareness of the value of primary sources and increase their use at the elementary and secondary school level, and on into post-secondary school. The office engages in programming to promote the effective use of primary source materials through a variety of channels, on-site, online, and at a distance. The office identifies Library collections that are appropriate for K-16 development, produces teaching materials to accompany the primary source collections, establishes distribution channels, develops teacher and librarian training, and investigates new technologies for dissemination.

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

The incumbent of this position will work a flextime work schedule.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Help

As a member of the Educational Outreach team at the Library of Congress, the incumbent will:

Contribute to the development and presentation of workshops on behalf of the Library of Congress to a wide range of K-16 educators by compiling, gathering or extracting information, and locating specific guidelines as requested by higher level specialists.

Research, compile, and draft primary source-based educational materials for use in K-12 classrooms to be presented in a variety of media, both print and online.

Support the implementation of programs that feature primary sources from the Library's collections and focus on teaching strategies that contribute to the development of critical thinking skills in students.

Develop a good understanding of the agency's role in promoting, coordinating, and improving professional development educational programs and activities. (Will participate in recommending new and revised educational programs and initiatives.

Provide support to the Teaching with Primary Sources grant program manager on a variety of tasks, such as: conducting research, extracting and compiling information from reports, assisting with panel reviews, preparing materials for meetings with grantees, and assisting with the preparation of correspondence to grantees.

Maintain professional contacts within the Library, and with colleagues in the education and museum professions. Incumbent may participate in education conferences, learning from educators about their needs and sharing information with colleagues.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet the following basic requirements in order to be eligible to apply for this position:

A. Degree: that included 15 semester hours in Education (or Museum Education), and

B. Experience teaching in a formal or informal educational setting, such as a pre -K -12 classroom, museum, discovery center, library or cultural center,

C. Experience conducting original research in historical collections for educational program or product development.

Qualifications

Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience and training sufficient in scope and quality to furnish them with an acceptable level of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

Ability to communicate in writing.**

Knowledge of professional development program principles, practices, techniques, and procedures.**

Ability to collaborate with others.**

Ability to develop instructional materials.

Ability to plan and organize work.

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid the minimum step of the grade.
